Why Stoke City have a done a brilliant job by tying up Mauritz Bauer with a new five-year deal
Stoke City endured a dismal campaign which saw the club finish 19th in the league, which means the Potters will now be competing in the Championship next season. The Potters have appointed Gary Rowett as their new head coach on a three-year contract and the manager will be aiming to make a swift return to the Premier League next season.
But in order to do so, the club are going to have to bring in a few additions to bolster the squad ahead of the new campaign. The Potters have already lost goalkeeper Lee Grant to Manchester United, who joined the club on a two-year contract. Stoke City have reportedly completed the signing of Bournemouth goalkeeper Adam Federici, who is set to replace Lee Grant at the club.
The Potters are also buzzing after the club handed right-back, Mauritz Bauer, a new five-year contract with the club which keeps him at the Bet365 Stadium until 2023. The versatile defender made the move from Rubin Kazan to Stoke City this January after making a total of 15 appearances for the Russian outfit.
The 26-year-old right-back made a total of 15 appearances for the Potters this season and impressed everyone.
The defender seamlessly transitioned into the Premier League, slotting into the right-back role straight away under former manager Paul Lambert, who was sacked after failing to rescue the team from relegation.
Bauer generally operates as a right-back but is also capable of playing in a wing-back role. The Austrian was also often deployed as a right-midfielder for former club Rubin Kazan.
Mauritz Bauer is a fast-paced full-back who has excellent quality on the ball. The player has a great work ethic, with a tireless work rate on and off the ball.
He is a mean defensive machine, with his aggressive style of play that makes it very hard for opponents to get past him. Bauer averaged a total of 1.7 tackles per game last season in the Premier League.
The defender also poses a huge attacking threat down the right flank. Bauer is often seen making marauding runs to the other end of the field before feeding the attack with crosses.
