Should Aston Villa Make A Move For Newcastle United Winger Rolando Aarons In January?
Aston Villa are reportedly interested in a January move for Newcastle United’s Rolando Aarons. The Championship outfit are desperate to seal a promotion to the top-flight by the end of this season and need reinforcements if they are to achieve that. Hence, to bring about some much-needed pace and strength to the attack, they are targeting the winger. Aarons does have a long-term contract with the Magpies and he won’t come cheap. However, the prospect of playing regular football should grab the 22-year-old’s interest.
The attacker has struggled for game time throughout the new season so far. Newcastle started the new campaign on a strong note under Rafa Benitez’s guidance but over the last couple of weeks, their magic seems to have worn out. They are struggling majorly and it is disappointing to see them in this situation – even more so since they were touted to be one of the clubs fighting for a spot in the top-6 when the season began.
That said, they are eyeing replacements but one thing is for sure: Aarons has fallen quite far behind in the pecking order and an exit from Tyneside is probably the best option for him.
With Villa harbouring an interest in him, Aarons could be tempted to make the switch. This deal can work out in the club’s favour as well since they are unlikely to spend a lot in January after splashing out a massive sum of money in the last couple of windows. Much as they’d like to sign a noted winger, they may have to settle for the out-of-favour Newcastle winger to remain compliant with Financial Fair Play rules.
That said, they still need an option for the role up front especially since Steve Bruce has had to deal with the absence of Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan for quite some time. Their absence has been affecting their performances. And when you think about it, signing Aarons may not be a bad idea. He is an effective wide man who possesses blistering pace. Even though he failed to secure game time under Benitez, he certainly does not lack talent.
Granted, one might argue that Villa already have Albert Adomah as a left winger but the fact is that Aarons can also be deployed on the right. Moreover, the club’s manager is quite adept at extracting the best out of youngsters, like he proved with Josh Onomah, and he could perhaps help Aarons rebuild his career while also fuelling Villa’s chances of securing a promotion to the Premier League.
