Tottenham shouldn’t think twice about signing this highly talented German to strengthen a key position – opinion

Tottenham Opinion: Should Spurs go all out to sign Danny da Costa?

Tottenham were dealt a big blow in their title hopes when they lost 2-1 at Burnley on Saturday. The defeat to Burnley means that manager Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain six points behind league leaders Liverpool.

It was a lacklustre performance from Tottenham, with Serge Aurier royally disappointing once again at right-back. Aurier wasn’t adventurous going forward and struggled defensively to cope with Burnley’s physical attackers.

In fact, it was his chaotic clearance in the middle of his own half that allowed the Clarets to score their second goal of the match.

Aurier’s poor performance at Turf Moor certainly gives Pochettino a headache ahead of the key games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Spurs’ first-choice right-back is Kieran Trippier, who had a fantastic World Cup campaign in Russia but has struggled to replicate that form in the league so far this season.

Hence, it’s important for Pochettino to solve the right-back conundrum in the summer and Tottenham should target Eintracht Frankfurt star Danny da Costa.

Danny da Costa, 25, has been one of the consistent performers for Frankfurt this season. The former Germany U21 international has contributed with two goals and three assists in 23 Bundesliga games, with manager Adi Hutter reaping the rewards of deploying him in an advanced role on the right.

The 25-year-old has shown that he can be equally efficient at right-back as well as on the right-hand side of the midfield. Da Costa is defensively strong and has the ability to go forward and attack, which is a fantastic attribute to have and is much needed in modern-day football.

The German has the energy, raw pace of a long distance runner, possesses good physical attributes and is a committed player on the pitch. He is a complete package as a full-back – surges forward, creates chances, hassles the opposition full-backs and tracks back to help his team in transition.

Conclusion

Da Costa’s style of play as well as efficiency going forward make him tailor-made for Pochettino’s system at Tottenham. The German is a fantastic talent and could prove to be a superb addition for Tottenham in the long run.

Neither Trippier nor Aurier has been consistent and it’s time for Pochettino to ditch either one of them and sign Da Costa in the summer.
