Tottenham need not worry about finding Lloris’ replacement by signing this meteoric 23-year-old on the rise

Why Spurs should move for Ugurcan Cakir as Lloris replacement

According to claims from Turkish outlet Hurriyet, Spurs are weighing up a move for Turkish shot-stopper Ugurcan Cakir as a long-term replacement for long-serving No.1 Hugo Lloris.

Lloris suffered a dreadful dislocated shoulder in the Lilywhites’ 3-0 defeat away at Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League last week heading into the international break.

The Frenchman’s handling error allowed Neal Maupay to head home Brighton’s opener but things turned from bad to worse for Spurs when he had to be stretchered off the field early in the game, leaving many to wonder that the 32-year-old’s spell on the sidelines could possibly be a long-term one.

Well, those fears have come true, with medical reports confirming that Lloris has suffered ligament damage in his shoulder, which is supposed to rule him out for the entirety of the 2018-19 campaign.

Paulo Gazzaniga is more than a handy back-up in the club’s ranks but the Lilywhites have already started their search for an ideal long-term replacement for Lloris, who had previously come under scrutiny prior to the start of the ongoing campaign for his uncharacteristic errors between the sticks last season.

Those bizarre and careless errors seemed to have crept into his game on a more regular basis this term before the shoulder injury damned him to an extended spell on the sidelines and the Lilywhites are apparently on the lookout for a new No.1 moving forward, as exemplified by their interest in Ugurcan Cakir.

Cakir, 23, has been making a lot of noise with his meteoric rise in Turkey, with his consistently impressive displays at Trabzonspor first catching the eye of Liverpool.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the rising Turkish shot-stopper over the past few months but Spurs have now entered the race to try and get one over their Premier League rivals. (h/t The Star)

The Antalya-born goalkeeper made his first-team debut for Trabzonspor way back int he 2015-16 season but it was only in the second half of the previous campaign that he established himself as the club’s first-choice between the sticks following the retirement of Onur Kivrak.

Cakir finished the 2018-19 season with 20 appearances in the Super Lig, conceding 23 goals and keeping 5 clean-sheets in the process, and he has really come of age for his boyhood club this term.

The 23-year-old is yet to keep a clean sheet in the league this term but his goalkeeping heroics have become a regular sight for the fans in Turkey to savour and admire each and every week.

Despite Trabzonspor’s defensive woes, Cakir bosts of an impressive concession rate of 9 goals in 7 league fixtures and it is not difficult to see as to why he has emerged as one of the most sought-after shot-stoppers in Europe.

Meanwhile, Spurs will be expected to dip into the transfer window once again in January in a bid to overturn an unexpectedly poor start to the campaign.

The Lilyhwhites looked completely listless and disjointed in the 3-0 defeat against Brighton following an ignominious 7-2 thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Mauricio Pochettino clearly has plenty of thinking to do when action resumes after the international break.

To put things into perspective, Tottenham making a move for Ugurcan Cakir would definitely be a step in the right direction and a smart long-term investment, given that the 1-cap Turkish international apparently has the potential to evolve into a top-quality goalkeeper in the Premier League in the years to come.

Despite his obvious quality and wealth of experience, Lloris has let the team down on several occasions over the past twelve months or so and, with the Frenchman set to nurse a long-term injury, Spurs should now turn their attention to Cakir, who is regarded as one of the best up and coming shot-stoppers in the continent.

Also, the 23-year-old is likely to be available for a modest fee in the market which should make it an absolute no-brainer for the Lilywhites to go ahead with their interest in January.

All in all, this is a move that could reap rich dividends for Spurs in the years to come and with that in mind, they need to go all out in their pursuit of the rising Turkish star.
