Why Southampton should plan to re-sign Adam Lallana in January

According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for midfielder Adam Lallana in 2020.

Adam Lallana, 31, has made just one appearance for the Reds so far this season – against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup, and appears to be a long way down Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.

This season, he has played just ten Premier League minutes, while he racked up just 13 top-flight showings last term, registering no goals and no assists.

Even in the 2017/18 campaign, the England international managed just 12 appearances in the league, again failing to muster up a single goal or assist. He is out of contract at the end of the season, but the club have the option to extend his deal by 12 months.

Even if the Reds block a January departure, Southampton should at least make an approach to re-sign Adam Lallana.

Southampton are currently struggling in the lower reaches of the Premier League table and will be aiming to avoid their worst run in a year and a half when they return to action against Wolves on Saturday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl worked his magic in the second half of last season and helped the Saints avoid relegation. However, he is yet to get his team up and running in the new campaign.

The Saints need reinforcements in January if they are to avoid the dreaded drop from the top-flight. Che Adams is yet to open his account for the new club and Hasenhuttl will have a lot of concerns regarding his summer signings’ struggles in front of goal.

Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings and Moussa Djenepo have performed well but Southampton have lacked creativity in the midfield. That’s why Hasenhuttl could do with Adam Lallana in his squad. Lallana spent 14 years at Southampton, making his professional debut back in 2006.

He scored 60 goals in 265 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as a fan favourite at St. Mary’s. The 31-year-old is a quality player who is creative, smart and possesses the vision to play those defence-splitting passes.

He has volumes of top-flight experience, which should come handy for a struggling Southampton side. Now 31, Lallana has a few more years at the top level and his acquisition would benefit all parties, and certainly bring the best out of Adams and Ings.

Verdict

Lallana’s creativity and intelligence in the final third is fantastic, which should definitely help improve Southampton’s play in the final third. All in all, Hasenhuttl should seriously consider a move for the Englishman if he becomes available in January.
