Back in June, a report the Sydney Morning Herald had claimed that Southampton were interested in signing Celtic star, Tom Rogic.
Tom Rogic, 26, played a crucial role in helping Celtic win the treble ‘Treble’ last season, although he endured an injury-hit 2018/19. After injuring his ankle back in May, he recently returned to the first-team action for the Bhoys.
Southampton have enjoyed rich success by raiding Celtic over the years for Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong and were keen to bring the Australian international to St. Mary’s.
While a deal didn’t go through then, the Saints should reignite their interest in Rogic when the transfer window reopens in January.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton have endured an inconsistent start to the new Premier League campaign, managing just points in six games.
They have struggled scoring goals as well as have been leaky at the back. Things will need to quickly change if the Saints are to avoid another relegation dogfight.
New signing Moussa Djenepo has been the brightest spark for Hasenhuttl’s side, but he has been in and out of the team due to injury problems. Same goes for Nathan Redmond, who has been revitalised since Hasenhuttl’s arrival at the club.
Despite the addition of Che Adams and the signing of Danny Ings on a permanent deal from Liverpool, the sea coast side have managed just six goals thus far in 2019/20.
A lack of creativity has hurt Southampton and Hasenhuttl can address that problem by signing Tom Rogic from Celtic.
Rogic made the move to Scotland from Australia back in 2013 and has become a key member of the Hoops squad in recent years. A technically-gifted playmaker, the 26-year-old thrives playing off the centre-forward.
Blessed with vision, quick feet and passing skills, the Australian is not only adept at making space for himself in the final third with his sharpness and agility but he is equally proficient in getting into right positions to put chances away.
Strong in the air, Rogic is a very good header of the ball and his tendency to drift into promising areas in the final third and create chances for his teammates has made him one of the most dangerous players in the Scottish Premiership.
The former Central Coast Mariners star is not only an expert playmaker but also very much capable of scoring goals from outside the box.
Truly, the Australian international has the energy and work-rate to fit into Hasenhuttl’s pressing system. Thus, Hasenhuttl should go for the Australian attacker in January. If Rogic can keep himself fit, he could turn out to be a fantastic acquisition for the Saints.
