Tottenham wouldn’t have to worry about their defensive future if they land this solid 28-year-old PL star in January

Why signing Willy Boly would be a smart piece of business for Spurs

According to the Birmingham Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are currently mulling over a move for Wolves centre-back Willy Boly, with the Lilywhites keen to dip into the January window for defensive reinforcements.

Arsenal were credited with an interest in the 28-year-old Frenchman a few days ago but they have now been joined by bitter North London rivals in the race to sign the towering centre-back. ( h/t Birmingham Mail)

Boly guided Wolves to a promotion-winning campaign in the Championship after initially reuniting with Nuno Espirito Santo on a season-long loan deal from Porto back in 2017 but he has excelled in the Premier League over the past twelve months, having made his move to Molineux permanent last summer.

The 28-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for the Black Country outfit alongside the likes of captain Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett in Nuno Santo’s back-three system and his consistently impressive displays haven’t eluded the eyes of some of the giants in the division.

Boly, who has made a total of 92 appearances for Wolves across all competitions, was amongst the standout performers at Molineux last season and he has already hit the ground running with a string of commanding displays at the heart of the defence this term, despite Wolves enduring a somewhat hit and miss start to their campaign.

As per whoscored, the 6ft.5-inch defensive giant has racked up some impressive numbers at the back, averaging 4.7 aerial duels, 3.4 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 7.1 clearances per game in the Premier League this season.

Those figures speak volumes of his abilities as a good all-round robust central defender, while his proficiency in carrying the ball forward with intent and knack for chipping in with crucial goals make him a solid option for any big-six club in the Premier League.

To put things perspective, the fans on the white half of North London might not be thrilled with the club’s links with Willy Boly but the Frenchman could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Spurs at a reasonable price in the market.

Despite spending a fortune on players like Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso in the summer, Spurs have endured an unexpectedly shocking start to their campaign and Mauricio Pochettino is likely to have his work cut out in guiding the Lilywhites to yet another top-four finish, with a title challenge now looking unlikely.

To that end, Spurs should make it a priority to sort out the futures of some of their first-team mainstays, with the long-serving centre-back pairing of Toby Alderwiereld and Jan Vertonghen out of contract next summer.

Spurs, of course, have the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth to fill in the void but neither has shown enough promise just yet to convince Pochettino that they are capable of stepping into the big shoes of established players like Alderwiereld and Vertoghen.

To that end, a move for Willy Boly would make perfect sense, given that the Frenchman has already proven his worth as a commanding centre-back at Wolves and at 28, he still has plenty of years remaining in his prime.

With the exit of Alderweireld and Vertonghen an inevitability, Spurs might have to dip into the market for more than one centre-back and, while they could be tempted to fork out millions on a world-class asset next summer, acquiring the services of Boly for a reasonable fee in January is likely to work wonders for a backline that has looked very shaky early in the season.

The 28-year-old might not be a world-class defender but he is someone who surely presents good value for money in the market and, with that in mind, Spurs should look to go all out in their pursuit of the Frenchman in January.
