According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t The Sun), Barcelona have revived their interest in signing Chelsea ace Willian, 18 months after their £55m bid was rejected by Chelsea.
The report also claims that Barcelona had kept tabs on the player from his days at Shakthar Donetsk.
The highly-rated winger moved from Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia to Chelsea for a fee of £32m in 2013. He is currently in his sixth season with the Blues.
With over 300 games for the Blues, Willian has won 2 Premier Leagues and 1 FA Cup and EFL Cup each. During his time in England, he has scored 55 goals and provided 56 assists for his team.
The 31-year-old has been consistent for the Blues over the past few years and has displayed some serious performances, terrorizing the opponents.
In this campaign, it appears that Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, has put his faith in youngsters. The likes of Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic and Mason Mount are being used regularly on the wings by their manager and have produced results at the right time. Given this situation, Willian’s chances would be limited in the future.
Willian is yet to renew his contract at Stamford Bridge and he might be fancying a chance to move to Spain.
On the other hand, Ernesto Valverde would strike gold if he manages to lure Willian to Camp Nou on a free transfer after his contract expires with Chelsea at the end of the season. Despite the ageing, Willian can make his presence felt for Barcelona.
The Brazilian gives a different dimension to the game. His style of play is well known to the footballing world. His interchanging play is impressive, though he likes to keep the ball at his feet. His off-the-ball movement is exquisite and is backed up by electrifying acceleration and pace.
Though he is a right-winger, Willian can equally showcase his skills on the left. This will be helpful for Valverde. Ousmane Dembele has been out of the team for the most part of his Barcelona career since joining from Borussia Dortmund, while Ansu Fati, is still developing.
As per whoscored, Willian has an average of 2.3 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game this season in the Premier League. His average pass success rate accounts to 83%. Willian has all the qualities to succeed at Camp Nou.
If Valverde makes a successful attempt to bring in Willian on a free transfer, he would have an opportunity to contribute to the Catalan giants. The 31-year-old’s experience can bring a different dimension to their attack alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
