Why signing this world-class 30-year-old would be suicidal for Tottenham – could badly affect Harry Kane

Why Tottenham should definitely not sign Real Madrid star Karim Benzema

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in making the move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. The report suggests that the 30-year-old striker could be on his way out of the Santiago Bernabeu next year and given his quality, he will definitely not be short of options.

Spurs failed to make a single signing in the summer transfer window but the Lilywhites could be forced to dive into the market in January.

Though Benzema is a quality, world-class striker, Mauricio Pochettino must definitely choose not to sign the French striker. Tottenham Hotspur possess one of the world’s best in Harry Kane, with the England captain racking up the goals on a consistent basis over the last four years.

Kane is the focal point of this Spurs team and the man to lead the line in almost every game. Though the burden of producing the goods often falls on the England striker, Kane seems to relish that challenge.

Bringing in Benzema could disrupt the England captain’s momentum, given the Real Madrid striker will surely want to feature on a regular basis. There’s no chance a player like Karim Benzema will be willing to sit on the bench often and that is why it would be best for Spurs to consider other alternatives.

Pochettino also possesses Fernando Llorente as a backup option should Kane need cover. Though the Spaniard has failed to make much of an impact, Pochettino can also resort to fielding South Korean Heung Min-Son as an unorthodox striker.

Benzema has scored 4 goals and provided 1 assist in 9 league games so far. At the age of 30, he is still definitely capable of playing on a regular basis. A man of his stature would never want to be used as a backup. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

Pochettino should aim to use those funds more wisely elsewhere. Bringing in Benzema would force the manager to restructure his line-ups, which could ultimately affect Harry Kane’s form. The striker has also recently signed a new long-term contract with the club and has committed his future to Tottenham.

Hence, it would be suicidal for Tottenham to even consider signing Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.
