Why Signing Edinson Cavani Would Be A Shrewd Move By Chelsea

There has been a lot of speculation about Paris Saint-Germain attacker Edinson Cavani’s future ever since the club paid a world-record sum to land Neymar from Barcelona. With the summer window fast approaching, it is being reported that Cavani could be set for a move to the Premier League, with PSG reportedly ready to accept a £53m offer for the player. (Metro)

Chelsea and Manchester United are both believed to be interested but considering the plethora of attacking options Jose Mourinho has at his disposal, it makes more sense for the Blues to target him instead.

Cavani might be 31 years of age but his skills on the field appear to show no signs of that. In fact, even today, he can easily rival any of the best young strikers in the business when it comes to his pace, power and goalscoring exploits. PSG might have crashed out of the Champions League in a rather terrible manner but that does not eclipse Cavani’s stunning performances for them this season.

In fact, he has scored a whopping 33 goals across competitions for the French giants so far, even providing 5 assists in the process. And that certainly overshadows Alvaro Morata’s measly contribution of 12 goals in all competitions for Chelsea this term.

Despite arriving at Stamford Bridge in a high-profile move last summer, Morata has simply failed to make things work, which has eventually led to Antonio Conte utilising the likes of Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud in a central role.

Although it has worked to an extent, the defending champions have endured a not-so-great season and they will be looking to change that next season. With uncertainty surrounding Hazard’s future as well, the club will need a prolific attacker with ample experience and Cavani fits the bill perfectly.

He never backs down from a challenge and if the player can replicate his PSG form for the Blues, Chelsea might be able to fill the giant Diego Costa-shaped hole in their attack.

Cavani won’t come cheap but from what we have seen so far, money has never been a problem for Roman Abramovic and if the club plays its cards right, they could secure a sensational deal for the talented attacker. One might argue that the Uruguayan is on the wrong side of 30 but if Morata puts in such disappointing performances at the age of 25, it will certainly not hurt the club to sign Cavani instead.

If they do sign him though, it remains to be seen how Morata’s future plays out. However, if the former Real Madrid star stays back, it might push him further below the pecking order since Conte also has Giroud at hand.
