Why signing this £20m hot-headed star could help Fulham to a mid-table finish next season

Why signing Aleksandar Mitrovic could help Fulham to a mid-table finish in the Premier League

According to reports, Premier League new boys Fulham are keen on signing Newcastle United star Aleksandar Mitrovic on a permanent basis after Serbia’s elimination from the World Cup.

Mitrovic, 23, scored 12 goals in 20 appearances for the London-based club in the latter half of the previous season on loan. In fact, he played a critical role in their promotion to the Premier League.

The striker, who has two seasons left on a five-year deal he signed with the Tyneside club in 2015, is rated at £20million by the club.

Mitrovic found himself frozen out at Newcastle United last season as he failed to make an impact. Eventually, he ended up dropping down to the Championship with Fulham in order to play first-team football.

His fortunes have turned around handsomely as Mitrovic worked wonders at Fulham. In addition to that, he has also proven his critics wrong with some eye-catching displays in the World Cup.

At Craven Cottage, the 23-year-old finally looked like the player Newcastle United hoped he could have been when they signed him from Anderlecht.

In the Championship last season, Mitrovic was on fire. In the 20 appearances he made, Fulham won 15 of them with three draws and two defeats. The Serbian has come a long way from his early struggles at Newcastle.

Working under Slavisa Jokanovic, the tall striker’s discipline has also improved and he looked like an inch-perfect striker. He was an absolute beast in front of the goal, impressing many with his hold-up play and intelligent movement. The 23-year-old is an old-fashioned target-man that suited Fulham’s style of play and he looked like a completely different player under Jokanovic.

Now that Fulham are in the Premier League, they must sign reinforcements if they are to realistically challenge the heavyweights. But signing Mitrovic on a permanent basis should be at the apex of Jokanovic’s priority list in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Mitrovic’s form for Fulham and Serbia have shown how deadly he can be in front of the goal. At just 23 years of age, it is not too late for him to shine.

Despite failing to deliver the goods at Newcastle, the Serbian deserves another shot in the Premier League. The ex-Anderlecht striker has matured as a player and he possesses the character and self-belief to work wonders at Craven Cottage.

Mitrovic is young, dynamic and a goalscoring machine. He truly deserves a chance to showcase his talents in the top-flight. Given a chance, he could turn out to be the man to guide Fulham to a mid-table finish in the Premier League next season.
