Why signing Lorenzo Pirola could be a smart move by Manchester United

According to FC Inter News (h/t Dailymail), Manchester United are believed to be interested in signing Italian teenager Lorenzo Pirola. They have sent scouts to watch him in the ongoing U17 world cup.

The 17-year-old has been impressive at San Siro since coming through their academy and was in excellent form against Mexico and Solomon Islands. He also started and scored in their 2-1 loss to Paraguay.

The youngster has moved from the youth team of Inter Milan to their senior team but is yet to make his debut. He has played a total of six matches for Inter Milan Primavera in the Primavera 1 and UEFA Youth League this season.

Manchester United signing this guy who has impressed with Inter’s youth teams earlier would add more depth to their defence.

The Red Devils are lacking as a defensive unit despite having players like Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Marcos Rojo. A long-term injury to Eric Bailly has kept him away from the team and Axel Tuanzebe, who looked bright in his few games, became prone to injury.

The departure of Chris Smalling to Roma on loan has left Manchester United with no back up for the two main defenders, Maguire and Lindelof. Marcos Rojo has mostly been called up to the team for the Carabao Cup fixtures and has played just two games in the Premier League.

The manager’s decision to bring in a youngster instead of an established star would help in the future and would also be a cost-effective approach.

After splashing the money on Harry Maguire in the summer, it would be wise for United to go for Lorenzo Pirola, who has the ability to develop and is usable when their men are rested.

A prolific defender, Pirola can give more options for Solskjaer to choose from if the current sets of players are unable to deliver. He would get his chances after he adapts to the needs of the Premier League.

Solskjaer, after becoming the Man United boss, has put an emphasis on the youth by signing young players like Daniel James and Wan-Bissaka, and they have already shown character in every game they have played.

Solskjaer has also given playing time to their academy graduates like James Garner, Brandon William and Mason Greenwood. Signing Pirola would help the manager add youth power to the ranks.

Verdict

It seems like Inter may not be willing to let go of the highly-rated defender without putting a fight. Pirola has also gained the attention of United’s rivals Manchester City, according to the Daily Mail, which shows that he is an exciting talent.

Solskjaer must quickly act to get his signature so that he can improve the depth in his defence.
