Why signing Lautaro could solve Manchester United’s striker woes
Inter Milan’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta, while talking to Sports Mediaset (h/t The Sun), claimed that the doors would be open for Manchester United to sign Lautaro Martinez in January.
The in-form Argentinian striker’s recent exploits have caught the eye of a number of clubs including Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona, all of whom are in hot pursuit of the Inter Milan finisher, the report adds.
Lautaro has been in sensational form since the beginning of this season and now has 13 goals in 21 matches across all competitions.
The young finisher has formed a formidable partnership alongside Romelu Lukaku in the attack.
A prolific finisher, Lautaro’s goalscoring skills were on the forefront when he scored a superb volley against opponents Slavia Prague in the Champions League group stage encounter.
Despite his short stature, he is also a good header of the ball and is a threatening presence in the opposition boxes, especially during set-piece routines.
Meanwhile, United have managed to climb the ladder after a rather poor start early in the season.
The Red Devils have scored 26 goals as of now, a majority of which have come from the boots of Marcus Rashford. The Englishman has scored 10 goals and is his side’s leading goal-scorer in the league.
Apart from him, the rest of the United forwards’ have failed to deliver consistently. This, in turn, has proven to be a major deterrent in United’s hopes of securing a Champions League qualifying berth.
Since the departure of Lukaku in the summer, Ole and United have stuck to the players they already had at their disposal. This saw the likes of Rashford and Anthony Martial donning the finisher’s role.
However, both players are not traditional centre-forwards and this has affected their performances. Rashford, who recently moved back to his preferred right-wing role, is now back in form and scoring goals for fun.
Martial, on the other hand, has not been so lucky and has scored just 4 goals. Ole’s decision to keep faith in his youngsters has opened the doors for academy graduates like Mason Greenwood. But the youngster is just 18 and still has a lot to learn.
Hence, it does not come as a surprise that Solskjaer’s side is interested in signing Lautaro.

Apart from Rashford, Martial and Greenwood, United do not have any strikers in their ranks. A move for the prolific Lautaro would not only offer them an outright finisher but also someone who could win them matches.
Verdict
Signing Lautaro will solve United’s ineffectiveness in front of the goal, which has troubled them so far this season.
Moreover, his arrival would give Rashford more freedom and creativity in the middle. Hence, roping in Lautaro would be the perfect answer to United’s striker woes.
