According to The Sun, Manchester United are keen on bolstering their attacking options when the January transfer window opens by signing German wonder-kid Kai Havertz from Bayern Leverkusen.
With Red Devils’ executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward’s recent proposal of a £125m double transfer for Havertz and Bayern Munich star Thomas Mueller, United have made their intentions loud and clear as they gear up for improvements upfront.
Though a 3-1 away victory over Norwich City on Sunday would have been a major boost for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his boys, United still have a lot of work to do, especially in the midfield.
If not for some spirited displays from the young Marcus Rashford and Daniel James across the flanks, Solskjaer’s team has lacked creativity and tempo which has been a major cause of concern for quite some time now.
A mere 13 goals from 10 Premier League appearances – with three coming in the last game, it has been a turbulent ride for a side that has lifted the league title a whopping 13 times.
Portuguese Andreas Pereira has managed only a single assist from all competitions this season while seasoned campaigner Juan Mata seems to have lost his flair – something he was praised for as a player before. With zero assists this season, the Spaniard looks completely clueless.
With a dearth of potent playmakers in their ranks, United need someone to help them turn the tables. And Havertz, with his exceptional composure and reading of the game, would be the answer to their current woes.
His 17 goals from 34 appearances last season makes him their best bet. With a £91million tag, let’s quickly analyse as to why the German has grabbed United’s attention and if the move would prove to be a successful one.
It is no doubt that Havertz is a natural talent. His 2016 debut for Leverkusen against Werder Bremen at 17 years and 126 days made him the club’s youngest league debutante but talent alone does not win you games and trophies.
He proved his credentials right when he established himself as a regular in the side under boss Peter Bosz last season. His growth from a young teenage sensation to a matured professional in a mere three years’ time adds more value to it.
Gifted with exceptional technique, composure on the ball and ability to split open defences, Havertz is not just any playmaker but a goalscoring one too.
United desperately need someone of his ability to give them that cutting edge while facing stiff opposition. Especially when the likes of Rashford and Frenchman Anthony Martial fail to find the back of the net.
Procuring the 20-year old would, moreover, be a brilliant investment for the Devils, considering the fact that the club is undergoing a transition after more than two decades of a campaign filled with trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.
With Ole clearly attempting to bring the club back to its days of yesteryear glory (h/t The Independent), the Norwegian has opted for raw young players from the academy.
That said, since the season’s beginning, adding Havertz’ would possibly be another bonus for a team in the making.
