Chelsea signing this top-class 30-year-old star would be a total waste of resources

Why signing Gueye would be surplus to Chelsea’s requirements

According to French outlet Le10Sport (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea are eyeing a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Having failed to land any new faces in the summer due to a transfer ban, Premier League side Chelsea must now make up for lost time by bringing someone new to add more strength to their squad.

Gueye, is one such target for the Blues, with the January transfer window soon approaching. The Senegalese player, however, just arrived at PSG last summer from Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Everton.

After arriving in the French capital, Gueye has had a successful season so far, making a total of 14 appearances in total under manager Thomas Tuchel.

However, an injury in between and a hamstring problem recently has seen the seasoned campaigner miss as many as seven league games. That being the only deterrent in an otherwise fruitful campaign, Gueye has been in good form since leaving the Merseyside club.

The defensive midfielder is a definite starter when he is fit and started PSG’s home and away fixtures against Spanish giants Real Madrid in the Champions League group stages.

The 30-year-old has a goal and an assist to his name so far and seems to be playing a key role even at this late stage in his career. The move from Everton to a bigger club like PSG speaks volumes about the deep-lying midfielder’s abilities.

Meanwhile, under Lampard, Chelsea have done a good job with the youngsters in the squad. However, the side seems to have suffered a recent dip in form.

However, signing Gueye feels like a really unnecessary move, with Chelsea having one of the most established midfield trios in the Premier League. They have top-quality midfielders like N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in their ranks.

Apart from them, they have Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marco van Ginkel. Also, Kante and Jorginho are world-class deep-lying midfielders and their ability is well renowned.

Hence, the question of one more defensive midfielder amongst them raises serious doubts regarding the club’s intent.

Verdict

With Chelsea having as many as six established central midfielders, their decision to make a move for Gueye seems totally unnecessary.

Moreover, he is in his thirties now and won’t get any younger. Hence, signing the Senegal star would just be surplus to their requirements at the moment.
