Why signing former Arsenal flop over current Gunners star would be a better move for Everton

Why signing Oguzhan Ozyakup can benefit Everton more than Jack Wilshere

As per a report by The Sun, Everton are looking to sign Oguzhan Ozyakup this summer, in case a deal for Jack Wilshere does not work out. The Toffees are looking to raid Arsenal once more after signing Theo Walcott in January but they might have to settle with targeting a deal for ex-Arsenal star Ozyakup instead.

Both players will become free agents once this season comes to an end and although both of them are talented enough, it does make more sense for Everton to make a move for Ozyakup.

Currently playing for Turkish giants Besiktas, Ozyakup has been one of their key players throughout his tenure and has even played a hand in helping them win consecutive Super Lig titles. He has managed to turn his career around quite remarkably despite being labelled a flop at Arsenal.

Although he emerged from the club’s prestigious academy like Wilshere, the player hardly managed to break into the first-team and featured just twice for the Gunners before being shipped off to Besiktas.

At the very essence of the matter, Ozyakup’s game is quite similar to that of Wilshere’s. He is blessed with ample technical knowledge and is capable of dictating proceedings in the middle of the park from any position. He can sit deep and break attacks up while also being skilled at surging forward to support the attack.

A player like him could actually work wonders for Cenk Tosun as well, whose January move to Everton has not exactly yielded the best of results. But the duo played together at Besiktas and for Turkey, meaning they could strike up a solid partnership here as well.

Hence, with an interest from the Toffees, the midfielder might be tempted to return to the Premier League. The Sun had reported earlier that Wilshere wants to wait around and see if Arsenal offer him a new contract or not and in such a situation, the Dutch-born playmaker could prove to be the best alternative for Sam Allardyce’s men.

To be fair, signing a player like Wilshere would show intent and ambition from Everton but one must not forget that the player has been plagued with injuries for a good majority of his career so far. The Toffees cannot afford to sign a player who might just end up being a liability. Thus, a move for Ozyakup could actually work out in favour of Everton this summer.
