According to a report by The Sun, Tottenham are in hot pursuit of West Bromwich Albion right-back sensation Nathan Ferguson. Jose Mourinho’s Spurs seemed to have sent top scout Brain Carey to Preston just to watch the teenager star in action, the report claims.
The 19-year-old has been on their radar for two months and his impressive performances for West Brom over the period have forced the Lilywhites to continue their hunt.
Meanwhile, Mourinho’s arrival has saved Tottenham from embarrassment after they were pushed to the bottom half of the table under former boss Mauricio Pochettino.
They are now seventh in the league, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and the Portuguese seems eager to add more reinforcements to his defensive department.
Having conceded 23 goals already, it is no big wonder that Tottenham had slid to the bottom half of the table earlier in the season. Having said that, Tottenham moving for a potential talent like Ferguson seems like a step in the right direction.
Ferguson, meanwhile, has played 16 of their 20 matches this season. The teenager has played a pivotal role under manager Slaven Bilic as West Brom are strongly in contention for a top-two finish.
It is already a big achievement for somebody so young to gain so much game time. Moreover, he has stood out in his debut season at the Hawthorns, receiving interest from Crystal Palace as well, the report claims.
Since the departure of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer, Spurs have had problems at the back, especially in the right-back role.
Current full-back Serge Aurier looked far from impressive, receiving a lot of stick for his poor performances, especially in the 7-2 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich earlier in the season.
The Ivorian has, however, turned the tables around with a string of better displays in recent times, mainly after Mourinho’s arrival. Still, it would be too early to heap praise on Aurier, who since arriving at Tottenham in the summer of 2017, has failed to establish a spot for himself.
Kyle Walker-Peters has not yet proved himself as a man for the big occasions and lacks experience.
With not many options left at right-back, it would only do a world of good for Tottenham if they make a move for the teenage sensation, who could be a valuable asset for the future.
Moreover, Ferguson has established himself as a key player for West Brom, having played most of their matches this season. Hence, a move for the youngster would definitely be a good one.
