Forget it Silva – Everton signing this Ligue 1 starlet would be nothing but a piece of disaster

Why signing Colin Dagba would be a real waste for Everton

According to Sun, Everton have identified Paris Saint-Germain defender Colin Dagba as a potential target for the January transfer window, with manager Marco Silva desperate to bring in reinforcements following a woeful start to the campaign.

The Toffees currently languish in the relegation zone after winning only two of their first eight Premier League fixtures, with under-fire Silva the odds-on bookmakers’ favourite to face the sack in the near future if the results do not improve soon enough.

However, with Everton already shipping 13 goals in the Premier League, Silva will be expected to go berserk in his pursuit of a new defender when the transfer window reopens in January if he retains his position at the helm of affairs moving forward.

The Toffees were always going to be short of cover in the centre-back department following the release of Phil Jagielka in the summer, with the club failing to iron out a permanent deal for last season’s loanee Kurt Zouma. And it hasn’t taken too long for those fears to come true.

With the central defensive pairing of Yerry Mina and Michael Keane failing to rise to the occasion and young Mason Holgate the only other senior centre-back option available in the ranks, it is easy to see as to why Everton have been left badly exposed at the back.

To that end, it should be a no-brainer for the club to go all out in their pursuit of a top-quality centre-back during the mid-season trading period in a bid to plug the gaping hole at the heart of the defence.

Everton’s backline has parted like the Red Sea far too often and they just can’t afford to live with such mediocrity in central defence if they are to harbour hopes of securing a respectable finish.

Ironically enough, though, the report suggests that the Toffees have set their sights on bringing in a new right-back in January, with PSG youngster Colin Dagba understood to be on Silva’s wishlist.

Now, that comes as a big surprise, given that the need to bring in a new centre-back is quite clear and obvious. The Toffees already have adequate cover at right-back in the shape of Seamus Coleman, while Djibril Sidibe has barely been involved in the thick of things since moving to Goodison Park on loan from Monaco in the summer.

Sidibe came through the door in the summer with the reputation of a seasoned campaigner in Europe and, in fairness to him, the 27-year-old World Cup winner hasn’t been afforded enough chances to prove his worth, with his only involvement in the Premier League thus far coming as a substitute cameo against Burnley.

Furthermore, Everton currently have highly-rated academy prospect, Jonjoe Kenny, working wonders on loan at Schalke in the Bundesliga, which further overrules the utility moving for a new right-back in the market.

Coleman is only a shadow of his former energetic self at the age of 31, agreed, and the Toffees should be looking to move him on next summer but one does get the feeling that signing Sidibe permanently would be a better option than moving for an unproven talent like Colin Dagba.

Additionally, Everton should look at Kenny as a regular starter in the Premier League moving forward, given that he is thriving in the Bundesliga and has the potential to reach great heights in the years to come.

Having spent a fortune on marquee signings like Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean and Jean-Phillipe Gbamin in the summer, Everton are still in dire need of a new centre-back, while a proven centre-forward is also likely to be high on the wishlist at Goodison Park due to the ongoing goalscoring crisis.

Looking at things from Dagba’s perspective, the 21-year-old recently signed a new long-term deal with PSG, meaning that the French giants are unlikely to let him leave on the cheap.

With that in mind, the Toffees making a move for Colin Dagba in January would be an absolute waste and one that will drain some valuable funds.
