Aston Villa

Aston Villa signing this 205-goal veteran for free would be the steal of the month

Why signing Adebayor would be a viable option for Aston Villa

The Sun suggests that Aston Villa have been linked with a shock move for former Arsenal and Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Dean Smith’s Aston Villa are currently facing an injury crisis, with the side losing their first-choice striker, Wesley, for the rest of the season following an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

The Villans have struggled for goals this season, with the side managing just 27 goals from 21 league games so far, which has seen them fall to a lowly 17th place in the table.

Wesley, a £22million signing from Club Brugge, has failed to impress, hitting the target just 5 times this season despite being picked for all their league games so far.

Now that he is out, Villa’s woes in front of goal have just piled up even more, with the club short of strikers at such a crucial juncture when they are fighting to avoid relegation.

Having splashed the cash abundantly in the summer, Aston Villa will have to be careful about their spending now, in order to comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations.

This means that they will only be able to spend a meagre amount and would have to bank on free transfers or loans in order to bolster their squad for the next half of the season.

Other than Wesley, Smith has two more strikers in his ranks – Jonathan Kodjia and the young Keinan Davis. The 30-year-old Kodjia has mostly been overlooked by Smith this season, keeping him as a back-up attacking option.

Davis, meanwhile, is working his way back to fitness after an injury, which gives a clear idea about the grim situation the club is facing at the moment.

Wesley’s unfortunate injury has left a massive hole that needs to be replaced immediately and in free agent Adebayor, Villa now have an affordable option in front of them.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old’s camp have identified Villa as a possible destination. Adebayor departed Turkish side Kayserispor last month, the report claims.

The report also added that his advisors believe that his vast experience in the Premier League could be attractive enough for the Villans to bring him to Villa Park.

Moreover, being a free agent, Adebayor is a cheap option for the Villans, offering them an opportunity to target another attacker in a small cash deal or loan in the transfer market.

Adebayor, on the other hand, is not someone new to the league, having plied his trade with some of the top clubs in the English top-flight. Having featured for Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Crystal Palace, Premier League is Adebayor’s familiar turf and favourite hunting ground.

Out of the 205 goals scored in his club career, 124 have been in the Premier League, which further lays claim to his excellent finishing abilities as a striker.

Adebayor is a veteran of 504 club matches and this could be an invaluable asset for the Villans who have majorly banked on the side’s younger talents, who have failed to rise up to the occasion until now.

Hence, making a move for old guard Adebayor seems like a reasonable option at the moment for the struggling Villans.
