Sheffield United would be quite wise to sign this tenacious 24-year-old to freshen their ageing front-line

Sheffield United opinion: Should the Blades sign Roger Martínez?

Given both Leeds United and Norwich City’s dominance in the Championship this season, fans would be excused for not noticing Sheffield United. The Blades currently sit second in the table, four points behind leaders Norwich City and one point ahead of Leeds United.

Not only that, they’ve managed to net 64 goals (amongst the highest in the league) and concede only 34, a tally that only more than Middlesbrough.

But despite all their positives this season, the club are not perfect. Superstar goalkeeper Dean Henderson is on loan, half their wide players are on loan but more importantly, their front-line has only one player younger than 30.

In fact, only Gary Madine and Scott Hogan are younger than 30 but both the strikers are on loan, from Huddersfield and Aston Villa respectively. The three permanent strikers, Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick and Conor Washington are the permanent options, with Washington the only man below 30.

Yet, the 26-year-old has struggled to make an impact and has yet to open his account with the club. Meanwhile, both Sharp and McGoldrick have picked up the slack, scoring 34 goals between them.

That is by no means a long-term solution and it’s one area that needs to be sorted out during the summer window and it can be done by bringing in Roger Martínez.

The 24-year-old is a wonderful striker and even more so, a tenacious one. Very talented as a young teenager, the Colombian made his mark at Argentinean side Racing Club, but left for the Chinese Super League instead.

Moves to Villarreal and Club América followed, with Martínez honing his talent across the world. What does make him perfect for Sheffield United is the fact that he flopped in the La Liga.

Martinez learned from that, picking himself up at Club America, where he has scored 10 goals in 31 games this season.

Furthermore, it’s Roger Martínez’s tenacious and aggressive side that the Blades need if they are to succeed. Not only is the Colombian a clinical finisher, but he has brilliant close control, is very creative, and has the strength to hold off defenders.

This combination makes him very lethal going forward and as a striker, it adds to his ability in front of goal.

Conclusion

While Sheffield United do deserve plaudits for their performances so far this season, the club needs to add new players in the summer.

And bringing in someone as good as Roger Martínez will help them move forward and into a future that potentially has Premier League football.
