Sheffield United signing this 28-year-old midfield general for free would be a fantastic deal

Why Sheffield United must snap up free agent Jack Rodwell

According to the BBC, former Everton and Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell is training with Sheffield United.

The 28-year-old has been without a club since leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season, with AS Roma having turned down the opportunity to sign the free agent in October. (h/t the BBC). The Blades boss Chris Wilder has confirmed that Jack Rodwell is not on trial and the club is looking at him.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, are flying in the Premier League since achieving promotion back in May. That shows in the freedom they are playing with, and the quality football they are producing.

While United have wowed fans and pundits alike with their stirring displays in the first half of the season, Wilder is looking to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season. (h/t The Telegraph)

The Blades’ biggest issue is their lack of depth. Mo Besic, on loan from Everton, showed as a substitute at Carrow Road he can make light of Oliver Norwood’s absence.

The gamble on Ravel Morrison hasn’t paid off, however. John Fleck and John Lundstram have been vital in United’s engine room, while Luke Freeman has tried making a difference off the bench on numerous occasions.

If Wilder’s side are to spring a surprise by qualifying for Europe next term, a couple of additions in January are a must. And snapping up Rodwell on a free transfer would be a smart move.

Rodwell’s injury problems have limited his playing time since starting his career at Everton and Manchester City. He played 22 times for Blackburn last season and went on trial at Roma but they looked decided to not sign him.

While predominantly a midfield player, the former England international is also comfortable operating in central defence, and due to his passing range, height and strength, he could be shifted into a deeper role at United.

Plus, Rodwell has solid Premier League experience that could be helpful for the Blades in the second half of the campaign.

Verdict

United could really use a transfer as they need depth in the squad to cope with a very long season and Rodwell would be a very inspiring signing for this flying side.
