Manchester United are reportedly the latest team to be interested in a January move for Juventus superstar Paulo Dybala. Estimated to be valued at £60million, it is not an amount to be coughed at as Jose Mourinho has enough financial backing at Old Trafford to make it happen. The manager has been intent on bringing fresh attacking options to the club and has identified Dybala as a potential recruit. However, is the move really something that United need right now?
The forward is capable of adding an exciting dimension to any team. The 24-year-old has risen to great heights ever since he joined Juventus and boasts of having scored 57 goals in 119 appearances for the Serie A giants so far. In fact, it was when Paul Pogba departed for Manchester United that the youngster truly made a mark for himself. In the process, he has won two Serie A league titles but he’s yet to win a Champions League trophy. Although the Old Lady got immensely close to winning it last season, they were outclassed by Real Madrid in the final.
At United right now, the attacking options may seem plenty but in truth, Mourinho does not have too many options he can rely on. The likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have lacked consistency. Juan Mata has been quite impressive but he has struggled with consistency as well and the same goes for Jesse Lingard. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been ineffective since day one and this dearth of creativity is something that needs to be sorted.
The Red Devils may be sitting at second spot right now in the points table but they are merely 1 point ahead of third-placed Chelsea. They have succumbed to many draws this time and have often been accused of playing highly defensive football. That is true but there is not much Mourinho can do when the attacking players lack activity and intent. Hence, it is understandable that the manager wants to bring in a goalscorer to cement themselves to the second spot on the table.
Dybala does seem like a good option but he will be incredibly expensive. Unless United sell a player – preferably Mkhitaryan – it makes no sense to splash out so much money, even though Dybala could prove to be a valuable addition. Freeing up the wage bill though would seem like a step in the right direction and then Mourinho can attempt to sign Dybala because Old Trafford has been starved of quality players up front.
