Why Selling Luiz Suarez Will Be Disastrous For Liverpool

According to the latest reports, Spanish Giants Real Madrid have offered Liverpool £20m plus their charismatic French striker Karim Benzema in an astonishing swoop for controversial Uruguayan Luis Suarez. It might be true that Suarez wants his way out from the Reds of Merseyside and Madrid are ready to pounce on the dazzling but controversial star striker.

The Spanish giants hope offering Liverpool a big-name replacement for Suarez plus cash will tempt them to sell. Benzema has been a top transfer target for two of other EPL clubs namely Arsenal and Chelsea. The Daily Star reports, “Madrid value Benzema at £20m, making the overall package worth around £40m. The French striker has been told he can leave Madrid after falling down the pecking order at the Bernabeu. Madrid have offered him to a number of clubs, though, and convincing Benzema to join Liverpool could be a potential stumbling block.”

Real are already making contingency plans in case Benzema says ‘no’ and they are forced to come up with a cash-only bid. Sources close to the deal claim splashing out on another big fee will be impossible for the Spaniards unless they sell first. If you go by stats, Madrid are over £500m in debt and spent almost £150m on summer transfers, including £86m on Gareth Bale. Even though the Frenchman perhaps has been told behind closed doors that he is surplus to requirements for the Spanish Giants and would ideally welcome a move to England to play in the much fancied Premier League.

In my personal opinion though, selling Luis Suarez will be a huge mistake for the Merseyside club. The Uruguayan has the unique ability to turn any match on its head and that too alone. His dazzling dribbles, nimble nutmegs and fancy footwork is something which any manager would love to have in his side What more, he has this unique goal scoring as well as a poacher’s instinct and can be the difference in the closest of matches. Suarez is also adept at taking set pieces which makes him all that more a valuable asset for his team which Liverpool at this time of the season can ill afford to lose. While there may be claims that Suarez would effectively leave the Merseyside Giants for greener pastures- to play in the Champions League, which any player of his stature deserves to showcase his talents in.

Benzema would inadvertently be a different weapon in the armoury. Even though he has that fox in the box mentality, I don’t believe he is someone who can make instant impact, not due to the price tag put on him, but largely due to the burden of expectations. Even though the Frenchman has great strides in his play, is brilliant on striking with venom, he surely doesn’t have the swagger that Luis Suarez possesses in his armoury. Liverpool have made a good start to the season and perhaps they are one mistake away from derailing their train on the tracks.
