This £25,000-a-week star’s latest injury is capable of worsening Man Utd’s woes

Why Scott McTominay’s recent injury is a big blow for Manchester United

According to a report from the Metro, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is expected to be out for four weeks following initial scans on an ankle injury suffered in a 3-1 win over Brighton on Sunday.

As a result, he will miss the games against Sheffield United, FC Astana, Aston Villa, Tottenham and Manchester City.

The 22-year-old was taken off in the dying stages of Manchester United’s win at Old Trafford after injuring his ankle. Although he made his way to the sidelines without help, he eventually required a stretcher to leave the field.

Scott McTominay, who earns £25,000-a-week, was a doubt for the game against Brighton after injuring his foot in Thursday’s 3-0 victory against Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League.

He recovered in time to face the Seagulls and delivered a solid performance before being forced off with an ankle injury.

The report adds that due to the significant swelling on McTominay’s ankle, a second scan is required which will take place in the next 72 hours.

This comes as a big blow for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, especially at a time when his team were gathering some momentum after a dismal start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

McTominay has been one of United’s most consistent performers this season, with only centre-half Harry Maguire having played more minutes than the Scotland international.

He has evolved into a key player at Old Trafford under Solskjaer this season. With Ander Herrera leaving in the summer, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic missing through injury, the 22-year-old truly stepped up to impress, despite the Red Devils’ inconsistent season.

The Scotsman might not be a particularly silky or skilful player but he’s the beating heart of Solskjaer’s side. Currently, there are no signs as far as Pogba’s return is concerned, even though the Frenchman had his ankle cast removed on Monday.

After Sunday’s win, United have won five of their last six matches and McTominay has been an influential figure in the run. Just when McTominay and Fred were starting to form a strong partnership in the midfield, the former is now set to be sidelined for four weeks.

Verdict

In McTominay’s injury absence, it remains to be seen if Pogba can return to match fitness and take the Scotsman’s place in the team. Nevertheless, it’s a huge blow for Solskjaer and his team – one that threatens to ruin the momentum built over the last few weeks.
