Tottenham would find Lloris’ ideal replacement by signing this top-class 23-year-old custodian

Why Schalke’s Nubel would be the perfect successor for Lloris at Tottenham

Football expert Kevin Hatchard recently claimed, while speaking to talkSport (h/t The Sun), that Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has set his eyes on Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.

The newly-appointed Portuguese man needs a successor to out-of-form first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Schalke custodian Nubel, who has played 12 matches in the Bundesliga, has conceded 15 goals and kept 3 clean sheets so far.

Clearly not the best of performances by the 23-year old, however, he has still impressed and was recently named the captain of his side, according to The Sun. And the young skipper has just 12 months left in his current contract.

It does not come as a surprise that the Spurs boss is interested in the Schalke keeper, who is yet to make a decision regarding his stay at Veltins-Arena, despite being offered a new deal in the summer (h/t The Sun).

For Spurs, on the other hand, things have not been running smoothly, with first-choice keeper Lloris currently sitting out due to injury.

The French World Cup winner had a terrible start to his season, conceding 8 goals and managing just 1 clean sheet in 7 matches.

Things went from bad to worse when he suffered an elbow injury in October while playing against Brighton.

Lloris, who underwent surgery recently, is now on the path to recovery but will not return anytime soon.

This time-gap could further diminish the veteran shot-stopper’s chances of making a comeback into the line-up, thereby preventing him from regaining his new boss’s trust.

Meanwhile, Paulo Gazzaniga, who came in as a replacement for the injured Lloris, has been far from impressive.

In 7 matches he has played till now, the Argentine has conceded 11 goals with no clean sheet. His poor form between the sticks has only compounded Tottenham’s troubles.

Hence, Mourinho is in dire need of a goalkeeper capable of turning the tables at the earliest.

Verdict

With 5 clean sheets in 18 league appearances for Schalke last season, the young Nubel has age on his side and could be the perfect successor to Lloris at Tottenham.

Also, he has made over 90 appearances to date and has enough experience under his belt to fight for a starting spot.

Hence, Nubel would be a worthy addition to a side that has already conceded goals at an alarming rate.
