Why Sander Berge could be a smart piece of signing for West Ham

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham are exploring a move for KRC Genk star Sander Berge this month.

Sander Berge, 21, has had a solid season with KRC Genk, impressing in the Champions League especially in both games against Liverpool, who beat the Belgian side both times. Interestingly, the midfielder had a brief spell with the Hammers four years ago as a teenager.

West Ham, meanwhile, lack enough quality in the midfield. Declan Rice is a consistent performer, but Mark Noble is ageing.

Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez haven’t justified their presence since arriving at the club in the summer of 2018, while Pedro Obiang was not replaced before the start of this season.

Rice has impressed over the past 18 months, but he needs a reliable player alongside him. And without a solid midfield, the Hammers will continue to get overrun.

As per Daily Mail, David Moyes has prioritised signing a new midfielder in January. In that regard, Sander Berge would be a good fit at the London Stadium.

Berge has impressed in the midfield for Genk and Norway over the last two years, becoming a regular starter for club and country.

In the Champions League this season, the midfielder has averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 0.7 blocks and 2.2 clearances per game, whilst his passing accuracy is up at an impressive 84.4%. [Courtesy: WhoScored]

The above numbers show the youngster’s potential and a good young midfielder like Berge would add freshness to West Ham’s midfield.

Mark Noble is ageing and irrespective of whether Berge is an instant upgrade on Noble or not, the fact that Berge is young and talented (as evident from his displays in the Champions League) gives West Ham the option to consider him as a future prospect.
