Huddersfield Town would bag a massive coup by signing this 24-year-old playmaker

Why Sammie Szmodics could be a smashing signing for Huddersfield Town

According to Bristol Live (h/t Examiner Live), Huddersfield Town are weighing up a loan deal for out-of-favour Bristol City playmaker Sammie Szmodics when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Terriers will need to fend off interest from Championship rivals Hull City, who are also interested in bolstering their ranks with a loan deal for the 24-year-old during the mid-season trading period (Bristol Live h/t Hull Daily Mail).

Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley has suggested that the Terriers, who might not have sufficient cash at their disposal in January, will look to scour the loan market in January for some reinforcements, Examiner Live understands.

Despite widespread interest from several other Championship clubs back in the summer, including Hull City (h/t Hull Daily Mail), Szmodics completed a big move to the second-tier with the Robins, following an impressive tally of 14 goals and 9 assists in 43 League Two appearances for Colchester United in the previous campaign.

The diminutive playmaker has struggled to break into manager Lee Johnson’s plans at Ashton Gate so far and his lack of playtime has prompted the likes of Huddersfield and Hull City to explore the possibility of a loan deal in during the mid-season transfer window.

Having bagged 38 goals and 16 assists in 162 appearances for Colchester, Szmodics came in with a big reputation at Bristol City.

With that in mind, however, the 24-year-old’s move to Ashton Gate has turned into a big disappointment. The versatile attacker has made only three appearances for the Robins in all competitions so far, including only a solitary start in the Championship.

To that end, Huddersfield Town offering Sammie Szmodics certainly seems to make sense. The former Colchester star is still an unproven player in the second-tier but a loan deal would mitigate the risk factor to a large extent.

The Terriers looked set for a horror season in the Championship, following a disastrous start to the campaign under Jan Siewert but Danny Cowley has somewhat sparked a turnaround of fortunes for the West Yorkshire outfit since taking charge late in September.

Despite that, however, the lack of firepower up top continues to be a nagging issue for the new manager.

The Terriers aren’t short of attacking options, with the likes of Isaac Mbenza, Elias Kachunga, Fraizer Campbell, Collin Quaner, Adama Diakhaby and Steve Mounie all the ranks.

Barring Karlan Grant, who is currently the top-scorer for the club in the Championship with 11 goals to his name, none of the aforementioned players has done an awful lot in terms of goal contributions.

With that in mind, the door is open for someone like Sammie Szmodics to come in on loan in January and provide that extra spark in the attacking third.

Essentially a central attacking midfielder by trade, the 24-year-old is also adept at playing out wide on either flank. With Alex Pritchard failing to make an impact in the hole behind the striker, Szmodics could provide more competition for the likes of Lewis O’Brien and Juninho Bacuna for the No.10 role.

As per the report, Szmodics caught the eye with his technical abilities, directness, creativity, as well as his acceleration over short distances and those attributes make him a tailor-made fit for a Huddersfield side that has found themselves bereft of ideas in the final third.

Verdict

All in all, Sammie Szmodics has all the makings of coming through the door at the John Smith’s Stadium as a smashing loan signing in January.
