Southampton signing this richly talented 26-year-old star would add a new dimension to their attack

Why Richmond Boakye would be a smart signing for Southampton

Back in September 2018, the Sun had claimed Southampton were interested in signing Red Star Belgrade striker Richmond Boakye. Mark Hughes was the Southampton manager then and he wanted to bring in the Ghanaian, but a move didn’t go through.

Richmond Boakye, 26, returned to Red Star Belgrade from JS Suning last summer after spending just six months in Chinese Super League. Despite enduring an injury-hit 2018/19 campaign, the 26-year-old bagged 13 goals and four assists in just 15 league games.

The Ghana international is yet to score in the league this season but he netted thrice in the Champions League Qualifying rounds, helping the Serbian club advance to the group stage for the first time in 27 years. And after consistently delivering the goods for Red Star, Southampton must not hesitate to rekindle their interest in Boakye.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have meanwhile managed just seven points in eight Premier League games this season. Despite signing Che Adams and Danny Ings permanently, the Saints are currently struggling to score goals on a regular basis.

Summer signing Moussa Djenepo has been the rare shining light for the sea coast club but he hasn’t been able to get a run of games due to injury problems.

Thus, it makes complete sense for Southampton to spend on a striker when the transfer window reopens. And Richmond Boakye would be a good fit at St. Mary’s stadium.

Boakye is a quality striker with solid pace and directness with the ball. He has fantastic dribbling skills and can shoot the ball from long and short ranges, depending on the situation.

The 26-year-old’s pace is incredible to stretch the opposition defence. He’s also adept at dribbling past defenders in wide areas to create space for a shot by cutting inside or delivering an accurate cross.

The former Juventus and Atalanta striker is a very calm and composed finisher when given a chance in front of goal, someone who can improve Southampton’s potency in the final third. All in all, Boakye could be the perfect player to partner Adams upfront.

Verdict

Boakye’s potential arrival could freshen up the Saints squad. Also, considering the Ghana international’s age, he should be able to adapt to the Premier League. And if things work out well, he could play a massive role in helping the club beat the drop this season.
