Why Real Madrid should sign out-of-favour 30-year-old Chelsea star instead of Bonucci

Why Real Madrid Should Sign David Luiz Over Leonardo Bonucci This Summer

European champions Real Madrid have found it difficult to maintain their stellar form intact this season, as they are already out of the league cup while having almost no chance of overtaking Barcelona for the league crown.

In fact, head coach Zinedine Zidane has been a subject of some high scrutiny this season, despite a successful 2016/17 season during which Real Madrid almost looked invincible. Therefore, the former French world champion will be keen to further strengthen his squad in this upcoming summer transfer window.

Defence, in particular, has been a huge issue for Los Blancos this campaign. Even though Real Madrid boast the likes of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane in central defence, the European champs are in desperate need of strengthening their depth in the defensive department and as per reportsLos Merengues are already interested in the services of Chelsea defender David Luiz as well as AC Milan captain Leonardo Bonucci but who would be a better fit for Zinedine Zidane’s men?

Leonardo Bonucci

Bonucci’s big money move from Juventus to AC Milan hasn’t gone as planned.

The Italian defender has struggled to find his feet at San Siro, often failing to provide the assurance in defensive phases. Although his performances have taken a slight upward trend in recent weeks, largely thanks to the highly influential Gennaro Gattuso, the former Juventus centre-back will still be deemed as a huge flop come the end of the season.

Leonardo Bonucci

That being said, however, one of the main reasons behind Bonucci’s demise this season has been the lack of a reliable partner. It’s fair to say that the 30-year-old is more of an influential figure rather than being a rock at the back. During his time with Juventus, Bonucci found real success alongside the more robust defensive partners in Chiellini and Barzagli.

Therefore, one could sense that the 30-year-old might regain his form alongside the mercurial defensive figure of Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid but before concluding anything, let’s look at Chelsea’s David Luiz, who is another defender hugely favoured by the European champs.

David Luiz

Chelsea star David Luiz is currently facing a difficult time at Stamford Bridge under the management of Antonio Conte, who has been the primary reason behind Luiz’s fall and lack of game time this season.

The Brazilian centre-back was involved in a spat with the Italian mastermind earlier this season, which eventually resulted in him being constantly overlooked by the former Juventus boss. As we go into the final phase of the season, the former PSG defender has featured in just 10 league games this campaign and is out of favour at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Unlike Leonardo Bonucci, David Luiz is more of a leader at the back. He is someone who can thrive if given the responsibility. He is known for his incredible work ethic and impressive commitment which drives him and his team, week in week out. The 30-year-old will definitely be a good addition to Real Madrid next season, largely because of his undying passion for the beautiful game.

The Verdict

Although both the players have been hugely effective for their teams in the past, it could be a huge gamble for Real Madrid to try their luck on either of these players.

But David Luiz could be an intriguing pick for Los Blancos next season. His ability to lead the defence could be helpful for any team in the world while his impressive attacking prowess makes him one of the unique defenders in world football.
