Why Real Madrid are making a sensible move in pursing this £53m playmaker who was close to a Liverpool move

Share

According to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, Real Madrid are interested in their playmaker Nabil Fekir after his move to Liverpool fell apart earlier this month.

Fekir, 24, was all set to complete a £53m switch to Anfield on the eve of the World Cup, only for the move to collapse at the last minute. During the medical, Liverpool sought a second opinion on a knee issue, and Lyon decided to pull the plug on a transfer.

However, Fekir is reportedly keen on a move to Liverpool and it is believed that the deal is not completely dead yet, and the Frenchman could still join the Reds after the World Cup.

But Real Madrid’s interest in Fekir will come as a worrying news for Liverpool. He was in sublime form for Lyon last season, scoring 23 goals and setting up a further eight in 40 appearances in all competitions for the French giants.

Real Madrid would do well with a player of Fekir’s calibre as new manager Julen Lopetegui would need to strengthen his squad to challenge for the league title next term.

Lopetegui, 51, who was sacked by Spain just two days before the nation’s opening World Cup game against Portugal after Real announced him as their new manager, already has one of the most dangerous attacks in Europe at his disposal, with Gareth Bale lining up alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Isco. But Fekir’s inclusion is certain to make Real’s attack more fierce.

Fekir’s strength lies in his left foot, and his creativity can help unlock some of the toughest defences. The Frenchman possesses the ability to score from set-pieces and Real could certainly benefit from a player of his quality. It must be also noted that Fekir is also highly versatile as he can play in central midfield, on either wing and as a secondary striker.

Thus, keeping all the factors in mind, Real Madrid must definitely make a move for Fekir this summer. The Frenchman, who has been a consistent contributor throughout his senior career with Lyon, would also ease the pressure off Ronaldo and Benzema.

In every way, Fekir is a player who will be a fantastic addition to Lopetegui’s squad at the Santiago Bernabeu next season.
