While he is a Chelsea player, the 23-year-old has made just two appearances for the Blues’ first-team, with both coming during the 2015/16 season. Miazga made the move to Chelsea from New York Red Bulls in the winter of 2016.
It proved to be a good one for the young centre-back, with him immediately making an instant impact for the club but soon became a part of Chelsea’s loan army. Moves to Vitesse, FC Nantes and Reading have all taken place, but it’s only with the Biscuitmen that he’s found his place.
While he only arrived in January 2019, since then, Miazga has played every game for the club. After his disaster spell with Nantes, it seemed that there was no way out for the young defender, with him playing only the first nine games.
Five continuous yellow cards and various other issues saw him get dropped from the team until Miazga eventually returned to Chelsea. The mere fact that he’s managed to produce a comeback for Reading shows just how well he has adjusted.
It’s why the club need to make the first move and convince the 23-year-old that his future lies at the Madejski Stadium and not at Stamford Bridge. That is the truth, as Matt Miazga has no chance of every playing again for Chelsea despite their transfer ban.
The Blues have the likes of Antonio Rudiger, David Luiz, Andreas Christensen and a few others at their disposal. This leaves no space for Matt Miazga to ever make his return, and a move to Reading would help him find a place in the footballing world.
That has proven to be a complicated problem for the young centre-back and the fact that he is only 23 years old plays to his advantage. Constant loan moves will harm his career, and some stability could prove to be vital to his development.
If he does make the move to Reading permanent and subsequently impresses with the club, Miazga could even make a return to the Premier League. But that’s a big question mark and by staying at Chelsea, none of that may ever happen.
For Reading, on the other hand, the ease at which he has adjusted to the club makes him a perfect option. Not to mention, the club has a few issues given the state of their back-line.
Both Paul McShane and John O’Shea are past their prime, struggling to play regularly this season. That’s one of the reasons why the club added Matt Miazga, and the fact that he’s slotted straight into the team showcases just how valuable he can become.

Matt Miazga needs a permanent move to Reading just as much as Reading needs to make a permanent move for Matt Miazga. The two have had a wonderful time together and given the aforementioned state of the Biscuitmen’s back-line, things could get worse without him.
