According to reports, Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie has admitted that his future at Liberty Stadium is up in the air. Following the club’s relegation, the player has hinted that he would be open to working with Steven Gerrard at Rangers.
McBurnie, 22, left Swansea earlier in January to join Barnsley on loan until the end of the season. Despite Barnsley’s relegation to League One, the Scotsman impressed massively, scoring 9 goals in 17 appearances.
A rollicking six-month loan spell has seen McBurnie attract interest from a host of clubs, including Rangers.
Rangers appointed Steven Gerrard as their manager last month in an attempt to bring an end to arch-rivals Celtic’s domination. The Gers ended their campaign in the 3rd place this past season, behind Aberdeen and champions Celtic.
It promises to be a huge summer for Rangers as Gerrard should do everything possible to close the gap between his team and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic. The former Liverpool U18 coach has overseen a busy summer transfer window so far, with Rangers capturing the likes of Scott Arfield, Jamie Murphy and Allan McGregor.
But to close the gap on the Bhoys, Gerrard’s Rangers simply need more. While shoring up the defence needs to be prioritized by Gerrard, he cannot neglect to bolster the attacking options at the club. Rangers need greater depth up front and with that in mind, Swansea’s Olivier McBurnie could be a good signing for the Scottish giants.
Primarily a centre-forward, McBurnie is also adept at playing on either flank. He has found it difficult to break into the Swansea side since his 2015 move from Bradford City, but the youngster has highly impressed on loan.
The 22-year-old may lack the pace and agility needed up front but he makes up for it with his understanding of the game and positional awareness. McBurnie displayed his goal-scoring prowess at Barnsley, which helped him earn a call-up to the Scotland senior team in March.
McBurnie is a developing talent and has provided hints of becoming a fantastic forward in the near future. And to improve his game, the 22-year-old should jump at the chance of joining Rangers.
If Swansea accept Rangers’ £4million bid, Rangers would make a shrewd purchase in McBurnie, who has the potential to perform better, provided he gets the right manager.
Thus, without further ado, the Gers must capture the signature of McBurnie. Swansea, on the other hand, will be able to recoup the money they spent on the player back in 2015.
