Rangers would compound their troubles by selling this talented 28-year-old despite interest from MLS outfit

Why Rangers shouldn’t sell Wes Foderingham despite interest

According to a report in Daily Mail, MLS side DC United are interested in signing Rangers’ backup goalkeeper Wes Foderingham in the upcoming transfer window down there.

The 28-year-old, who is the second-choice stopper in the team behind Allan McGregor, is in his final year of his contract at the Ibrox. As per rules, he is free to talk foreign clubs from January onwards. (h/t Daily Mail)

Foderingham, who started his career at Fulham in London, has made over 100 appearances for the Gers since joining them from Swindon Town back in 2015.

However, with McGregor being the number one, he has been reduced to limited game time. For that reason, he is slowly considering a move away from Scotland very soon.

But, here’s why Rangers should offer him a new deal and convince him to stay beyond the current season:

McGregor’s age means Foderingham has future at the Ibrox

Allan McGregor has been the number one keeper in the Rangers team for some time now. However, he is 37 and might not be playing top-level football beyond a year or two.

Foderingham has a chance to stick around at the Ibrox and wait for his opportunity to take that number one spot and make that his own in due course of time.

Furthermore, from the Gers’ point of view, they do not have many options beyond these two in their goalkeeping ranks. So, they should also convince the 28-year-old to bide his time here and then take the number one role.

In terms of his attributes, Foderingham is a quality stopper who has a good reach to cover a large portion of the goal and has good reflexes. He is good enough to dominate his six-yard box as well.

Conclusion

We can conclude by saying that Rangers shouldn’t let Wes Foderingham go after this season. They should offer him a new deal sooner rather than later.
