Forget it Gerrard – Rangers would be better off avoiding this 29-year-old Birmingham star and here’s why

Rangers opinion: Gers shouldn’t make a move for Greg Stewart

The Birmingham Live has reported that Scottish Premiership side Rangers are really interested in making a move for Birmingham City forward Greg Stewart.

Currently on loan at Aberdeen, the 29-year-old has struggled to make an impact this season. His previous loan spell was spent with Kilmarnock FC, where he scored 8 goals and created 7 goals.

Stewart’s ability was on show in the first half of the season but despite that, the centre-forward returned to Birmingham City.

However, the fact that he wasn’t getting game time at St. Andrews saw him leave for a second loan spell at Aberdeen. Since the move in mid-January, the forward has played 10 games but failed to score a goal.

While there is no doubt that Steven Gerrard’s side need a new striker to support Morelos, it should not be Greg Stewart. While he is available for free in the summer, it doesn’t mean the Gers should make a move for him.

At the age of 29, Stewart will only digress and as he has shown, he struggles to maintain consistency. That has always been his problem and though he has spent a large majority of his playing career on loan in the Scottish Premiership, Stewart has struggled to find the net.

Last season, the 29-year-old only managed a paltry four goals in all competitions and six the season before. It seems that the transformation into a striker has changed the Scottish international, with him producing 26 goals in the 2015/16 season.

Since then, Greg Stewart has managed no double-figure hauls or even a consistent streak of goals, which is what Rangers need. The Gers are looking to challenge Celtic for the Premiership title and for that, they need a reliable second striker.

Alfredo Morelos has been ever-reliable but their second top scorer this season is right-back James Tavernier with 11 goals. While that is fantastic for a right-back, Kyle Lafferty should be embarrassed by that, as he has scored just 4 goals.

Jermain Defoe, who arrived on loan during the January window, has scored 5 in 10 games at an average of a goal every two games. It emphasises why the Rangers need another centre-forward to take the burden off Morelos. However, it should not be Greg Stewart.

Conclusion

There is a catalogue of center-forwards that Rangers can make a move for in the summer. Greg Stewart should not even be considered in that company and the 29-year-old has showcased exactly why.
