Well done Gerrard – Rangers cutting ties with £2m flop star is a step in the right direction

Why Rangers offloading Eros Grezda is an ideal move by Gerrard

According to Daily Record, Rangers winger Eros Grezda has left the club to rejoin Croatian side Osijek on a permanent deal.

Grezda, 24, came through the ranks of Dinamo Zagreb and Grazer Ak’s youth system. He was signed by Steven Gerrard for the Gers on a four-year contract in August 2018 for a fee of £2m. The youngster has made a name for himself in Croatia and was bought with the hope of fuelling Rangers’ attack.

He featured regularly for Osijek and Lokomotiva in the Croatian top-flight before moving to Scotland. Initially, he was given chances by the manager but later, an ankle injury forced him out of action and he eventually lost his place in the squad, thus making only 17 appearances for the Gers without any sort of impact.

Meanwhile, the Gers are looking strong in the Premiership and are aiming for the first trophy under Gerrard’s management. They narrowly missed out on the Betfred Cup after losing to their rivals in the final last month.

They currently find themselves 2nd in the league standings after claiming a 2-1 league win over Celtic and in doing so, the Gers have reduced the deficit on the leaders to 2 points with a game in hand.

At the moment, the Gers have a huge squad of 29 members for the season, making it difficult for every member to get regular game time. The manager has to make some adjustments before the winter window closes.

Liverpool loanee Sheyi Ojo was a regular member of the team sheet initially but has lost his place in recent weeks. Though he has been available, the Gers boss has time and again shifted between Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield to play on the right-hand side of the attack.

The duo has done brilliantly whenever called upon and have together provided 10 assists and scored 5 goals. Apart from that, youngster Glenn Middleton, who is also capable of playing on either wing, has returned after his loan spell at Hibernian was cut short.

Having said all these, Gerrard has seven wingers at his disposal including Eros Grezda. Therefore, even if the Albanian leaves, there would not be any limitations in the squad.

Gerrard must make sure that he is able to trim down the squad at the right moment. Allowing Grezda to move away from the Ibrox would also save them from wasting their resources on a player who is mostly on the bench.

The 24-year-old would also benefit from the move as he can see regular game time in Croatia, given he maintains his fitness. And going back to his former club would also help him in settling down quickly without any obstacle.

Therefore, the Gers offloading the Albania international is good for both the club and the player. Grezda can revive his career at the club level and hope to make progress at the international level too.
