Newcastle would be very wise to revive their interest in 21-goal Benfica star in January

Why Rafa Silva would be a smart signing for Newcastle United

Back in May, Rafa Silva’s agent Antonio Araujo had claimed that Newcastle United were one of the clubs interested in signing the Benfica star (h/t The Chronicle). However, a deal didn’t materialise during the summer transfer window.

Rafa Silva, 26, enjoyed an exceptional season with Benfica as he scored 21 goals in 44 games across all competitions, guiding the club to the league title. That saw him attract a lot of attention over the summer but he stayed put with the Portuguese champions.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a decent start to the new campaign, managing three goals in 11 games across all competitions. With Rafa Silva starring for Benfica over the last couple of seasons, Newcastle must reignite their interest in him when the transfer window reopens in January.

Newcastle haven’t been great this season under Steve Bruce, with the Magpies currently 13th in the table.

A severe lack of creativity continues to plague the club. Summer signings Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin are yet to make significant contributions to the team, while Miguel Almiron is yet to assist or score for the Toon Army since joining from Atlanta United in January.

Jonjo Shelvey returned to the starting XI against West Ham and produced an excellent display. He ran the show in the midfield and scored a delightful free-kick that give Bruce’s side all three points. However, the Magpies need more creativity and goals from the midfield to avoid a relegation dogfight.

That’s why Newcastle must go for Rafa Silva. The Portuguese international has been one of the most devastating attackers in Portugal over the past season, where he swept in 15 goals.

He is still only 26 and would add fluidity to Newcastle’s attacking play. Alongside the tenacious Isaac Hayden and creative Shelvey, Silva could thrive in midfield and help the Magpies open up rigid defences.

As per WhoScored.com, the Portuguese has averaged 1.9 shots, 1.9 key passes and 3.6 dribbles per game in the league, whilst bagging an assist and two goals. These mini-stats give a rough idea as to what Silva could offer to the Magpies if a move goes through.

Verdict

Hence, Newcastle would be quite wise to revive their interest in the Benfica attacker and sign him up in January.
