QPR going all out to sign this 6ft 3in towering star makes a whole lot of sense – Here’s why

Why QPR should go all out for Scott McKenna in January

According to Daily Record, QPR are set to go back in the market for the services of Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna when the transfer window reopens in January.

The West London outfit had a deadline-day bid for the 23-year-old centre-back turned down by Aberdeen this past summer but the R’s are now set to make a renewed attempt to sign him in January. (h/t Daily Record)

Boss Mark Warburton has identified the centre-back department as a priority heading into the mid-season transfer period and they have once again set their sights on McKenna, who is widely one of the best central defenders north of the border in the Scottish Premiership. (h/t Daily Record)

Championship rivals Hull City, Stoke City, Swansea City, newly-promoted Premier League club Aston Villa, as well as Old Firm giants Celtic, had all registered an interest in the 23-year-old during the summer window. (h/t Daily Record)

However, a move south of the border failed to materialize for the Scottish international, with Aberdeen blowing the potential suitors out of the water with their massive valuation of the academy graduate. In fact, Aston Villa had a £7million bid turned down by the Dons (h/y Daily Record).

To put things into perspective, a lack of stability at the back has proven to be a major stumbling block for QPR in the Championship this season and Scott McKenna is capable of being the man to shore up the club’s porous and vulnerable backline.

As much as the R’s have offered further up the pitch under Warburton this season, they have failed to stem the inflow of goals, having already shipped as many as 44 goals so far.

The centre-back pairing of Grant Hall and Toni Leistner hasn’t been outrightly poor but QPR can hardly afford to harbour hopes of mounting a serious push for promotion in the second half of the campaign with such a hopeless defensive record.

Lee Wallace, Geoff Cameron and Yoann Barbet have struggled to hit top gear and someone like Scott McKenna could make a big difference to a defensive unit that has parted like the Red Sea far too often.

Verdict

The Aberdeen star still has plenty of room for development at 23 and he certainly fits the bill as a top-quality player.

Standing at 6ft 3in with a towering frame, McKenna is only going to get better with time, meaning that the Scottish international could well be an excellent long-term solution to QPR’s defensive woes.

All in all, QPR completing a move for Scott McKenna in January would be a massive boost to their hopes of securing a top-six finish in the EFL Championship.
