Why Pep Guardiola must think twice before making a move for this 3-time Champions League winner

According to a report by the Daily Express, Manchester City are interested in signing Real Madrid star Toni Kroos. The 3-time Champions League winner has been instrumental to the Spanish giants’ success over the last few years.

In fact, Los Blancos recently scripted history by winning the Champions League for the third consecutive time. And while their attackers and defenders deserve credit, one cannot deny that the midfield had a key role to play.

Most teams are renowned for having famed attacking trios. For example, Barcelona had Luis Suarez, Neymar and Lionel Messi, while Liverpool have successfully established one, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino up front.

To be fair, even Real have had one in recent times comprising Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. But the Spanish giants have also had a consistent midfield trio in the form of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro.

Real’s midfielders have dominated and decimated some of the best teams across Europe. With Casemiro usually occupying the base of the three-man midfield, Kroos and Modric have forged a solid central midfield partnership. But now, it looks like one of them might be leaving the club this summer.

With interest stemming from Premier League champions City, it remains to be seen if Madrid will choose to retain Kroos or cash in on him.

Incidentally, Real and City operate in a similar manner on the field. Zinedine Zidane, who parted ways with Los Blancos recently, and Pep Guardiola both made use of a 4-3-3 formation last season, meaning Kroos should have no trouble slotting into the three-man midfield at City.

Kroos’ experience would prove to be immensely handy and there is no doubt about his skills. But given the situation, Real will command a sky-high fee for Kroos. With that in mind, do City really need him?

Now, the Sky Blues have deep pockets and shelling out money won’t be a concern for them. But they already have some of the best midfielders in the form of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva, to name a few.

Over the course of the last season, De Bruyne and David Silva were absolutely unstoppable. Thus, the move seems highly unnecessary for City right now. One might argue that it would be great to boost squad depth but if they do sign him, one of these aforementioned talented players would have to be benched.

Hence, Guardiola perhaps should think twice before signing Kroos this summer.
