Tottenham would strike gold by orchestrating a swap deal for Christian Eriksen and this versatile 25-year-old ace

Why Paulo Dybala-Christian Eriksen swap deal would be ideal for Tottenham

According to The Sun, Spurs are exploring the possibility of an audacious swap deal in January that would see Paulo Dybala arrive in North London with contract rebel Christian Eriksen heading to Turin.

Dybala was heavily linked with a move to Spurs back in the summer transfer window and The Sun suggests that the Argentine international even agreed personal terms with the Lilywhites, only for a move to collapse at the eleventh hour due to a problem with the player’s image rights.

Eriksen, on the contrary, was a top target for the likes of Man United and Real Madrid in the summer but there was nothing concrete about those speculations and the Dane opted to stay put at Spurs until at least January, with his contract set to expire on June 2020. (h/t Sun)

The 27-year-old playmaker has admitted to claims that he could be ready for a new challenge and, in a twist of fate, Juventus are apparently about to help him complete a move away from North London in January, amidst claims that the Serie A heavyweights are prepared to cash in on Dybala. (h/t Sun)

Eriksen was a notable exclusion from Mauricio Pochettino’s eleven in the first three games of the Premier League, although he did come off the bench in each of those fixtures before eventually starting in the North London Derby against Arsenal heading into the international break.

However, speculations over Eriksen’s future have ensured that the transfer saga continues to stretch until January and, possibly, even beyond that, with Spurs now set to go back in the market for Dybala’s services.

To put things into perspective, Tottenham should not leave it too late to sort out the future of Eriksen, given that they face the risk of losing him for absolutely nothing next summer.

It would be a real shame for the club if they allow a player of his stature to depart on a free transfer and if the Dane doesn’t commit his long-term future to the club before January, it would make perfect sense for the Lilywhites to cash in on him and land a handsome profit from his sale.

Of course, the pressure of finding a like-for-like replacement is likely to be a cause of concern but Dybala apparently has the technical abilities to fill in the Dane’s shoes in Pochettino’s system.

The Argentine stalwart has been forced to take a back seat at Juventus since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo last summer and a move to Spurs could be a fair settlement for all parties involved.

Not only is he capable of playing anywhere across the forward line, including in a centre-forward role as the leader of the pack, but Dybala also has the playmaking attributes to fit into a No.10 role behind someone like Harry Kane.

Indeed, Eriksen offers a lot more in terms of work-rate and his overall contribution to the team but Dybala is a more than a handy replacement for the Dane at Spurs and the touted swap deal, if it comes off, could prove to be one of the most high-profile January transfers of all time.

Dybala still has his best years ahead of him at the age of 25, so Spurs have every reason to be confident of getting a good deal, as are Juventus, who will be looking forward with great enthusiasm to enjoy the prime of Christian Eriksen.

Whether or not there would be any direct exchange of cash between the two clubs is something that we are yet to know but Spurs might bag a real coup if this comes off, nonetheless.
