According to the Italian press (h/t ESPN), Tottenham are one of the clubs interested in signing Ajax right-back Noussair Mazraoui.
Noussair Mazraoui, 21, was a shock revelation in a thrilling Ajax side that reached the Champions League semi-finals last season. He featured heavily last season, clocking up 48 league and cup appearances during the 2018-19 season. The 21-year-old scored four goals and laid on five assists, also helping Ajax keep 21 clean sheets.
However, the young defender has found opportunities with the Eredivisie outfit harder to come by this time around. This has led a number of clubs to keep tabs on the Mazraoui’s situation, with Premier League club Leicester City also interested, the report adds.
That being said, Tottenham must do everything to their powers to win the race for the Netherlands-born Moroccan international in January.
Tottenham sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer but failed to bring in his replacement. That left Mauricio Pochettino to start the season with Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier as options at right-back.
And failing to sign Trippier’s replacement has come back to haunt Pochettino and co. as Aurier has been extremely poor and Walker-Peters is still not ready to start league games.
Come January, signing a new right-back must be at the top of Pochettino’s priority list.
Mazraoui is an excellent right-back with enormous potential. He was a crucial part of the Ajax side last campaign, helping Erik ten Haag’s men complete the league and cup double as well as reach the Champions League semi-final, only to be knocked out by Lucas Moura’s incredible hat-trick.
The young gun not only appeared on the right side of the defence but also at left-back and in holding midfield.
Even though he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked to, the 21-year-old has a bright future and his massive potential could be unlocked under the watchful eyes of Pochettino.
The 21-year-old has a contract at Ajax until 2022, but it remains to be seen how much he would cost. Mazraoui might turn out to be an upgrade over the unreliable Aurier and provide Walker-Peters with a stiff fight for a place in the starting XI.
Signing Mazraoui could finally solve Tottenham’s right-back woes. Thus, it is important for Spurs to start planning to acquire the Ajax starlet’s signature in January.
