Nottingham Forest offering fresh deal to their 27-year-old star could work out very well

Why Nottingham Forest should offer Sammy Ameobi fresh terms

According to the Nottingham Post, Nottingham Forest star Sammy Ameobi has set his sights on earning a new deal at the City Ground, with his existing contract set to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign next summer.

Having cancelled the final year of his contract with Bolton Wanderers following the Trotters’ relegation from the Championship, Ameobi joined Forest as a free agent in the summer on a one-year deal until the end of the 2019-20 season.

However, as per the report, the 27-year-old feels that he has done his reputation no harm with his performances for the two-time European Cup winners so far and remains hopeful of extending his stay at the City Ground beyond next summer.

The report, though, doesn’t mention whether Forest are genuinely interested in retaining the services of Sammy Ameobi for the long term, with manager Sabri Lamouchi yet to make a decision on the winger’s future, and there haven’t been any updates on the Reds initiating any sort of contract negotiations with the 27-year-old.

Lamouchi inherited a big squad at the City Ground when he took over the reins from Martin O’Neill in the summer but the Frenchman still opted for a massive overhaul, with Nottingham Forest once again grabbing the headlines numerous times throughout the transfer window with numerous arrivals and departures.

Fast-forwarding the sequence of events to mid-November, Lamouchi should be happy with how his summer recruits have fared so far, with little-known entities like Brice Samba, Yuri Ribeiro and Samba Sow all making their presence felt in the Championship.

With most of the manager’s gambles in the transfer window paying off handsomely, Forest have laid down an early marker as one of the playoff favourites following a strong start to the campaign

Indeed, there is still a long way to go in the season but the promotion noise at the City Ground is bound to get louder in the coming months if the Reds continue to rack up the points week in, week out.

Sammy Ameobi wasn’t one of the high-profile recruits to come through the door at the City Ground in the summer but the 27-year-old has established himself as a regular fixture in the playing eleven under Lamouchi.

Having accumulated just 12 goals and 7 assists in 91 appearances for Bolton, the fans might not have expected a lot from the ex-Newcastle United star, but he has certainly gone a long way towards silencing his critics with a number of top-drawer performances.

Ameobi opened his account with a goal in the 3-2 victory away at Stoke City back in November and was instrumental as the Reds came back from behind to claim all three points against Nathan Jones’ side.

Notwithstanding the fact that he hasn’t been a regular contributor with goals and assists, the 27-year-old once again came to the fore to guide the Reds to a 2-1 victory over Luton Town earlier this month.

A return of 2 goals and an assist in 15 Championship outings does not look overly impressive but those who have watched him play would know that he has been one of the driving forces behind Forest’s stellar start to the season with his overall contribution on the pitch.

Verdict

Lewis Grabban remains the go-to man for Lamouchi when it comes to finding the net on a consistent basis but Sammy Ameobi has shown that he is more than good enough to chip in with some key contributions when the team needs him to deliver the goods.

As well as his wealth of experience and obvious pedigree in the Championship, Ameobi had shown in the past during his days at Newcastle that he can be a really useful squad player in the Premier League.

He hasn’t really gone on to fulfil his true potential anywhere he has played so far but at 27, the time is right for him to push on for greater heights in his career and early signs suggest that his spell at Nottingham Forest could possibly turn out to be a turning point.

With that in mind, Forest should consider a new deal for Sammy Ameobi at some point in time before the end of the campaign, regardless of which division they play their football next season.
