Why Newcastle will rue missing out on signing Chelsea’s 21-year-old promising starlet

Why Newcastle have missed a trick by not signing Kasey Palmer

As per reports, Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer will join Blackburn Rovers on loan until the end of the season. Blackburn have agreed on a deal for the talented 21-year-old.

Palmer, 21, impressed during a loan spell at Derby County last season and prior to that, played a crucial role for Huddersfield Town in their promotion-winning 2016/17 season.

Considering that he is likely to find his first-team chances limited at Stamford Bridge under new manager Maurizio Sarri, Palmer is keen to leave Chelsea in order to seek regular game time to continue his development. Now that the 21-year-old hotshot is close to joining Blackburn, have Newcastle United missed the trick by failing to land him?

Kasey Palmer

They certainly have. Newcastle United were reportedly interested in Palmer, the England Under-21 international who enjoyed a successful loan spell with Derby. The 21-year-old played 14 times under Gary Rowett at Pride Park, scoring two goals.

Palmer, who has played six times for England’s U21 side, has never made a Premier League appearance for Chelsea, so a move to Newcastle could have been a massive opportunity.

The 21-year-old showed during his short spell with Derby that he has the quality to make a big impact at this level and Rafael Benitez’s men are certainly in need of more attacking reinforcements given how they struggled to score goals last season.

Palmer was an influential player in Huddersfield’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2016/17 campaign and while his second loan stint with the Terriers wasn’t as impressive as the first, his quality is undeniable and would be of huge help for Blackburn in their upcoming season.

Due to the 21-year-old’s quick feet and dribbling skills, the No.10 role at Newcastle would have been tailor-made for him as he possesses the creativity and guile to unlock the tightest of defences.

Kasey Palmer

However, Newcastle have already signed Kenedy on loan from Chelsea in the summer transfer window, and recruiting Palmer from the Londoners is not possible due to Premier League’s rules.

Kenedy had impressed during his short loan spell at Tyneside from Chelsea and it was a no-brainer for Benitez to sign the Brazilian again.

And once Kenedy’s loan move to Newcastle this summer went through, there was never going to be an option for Benitez’s club to sign Palmer on loan. However, Benitez had the opportunity of signing Palmer on a permanent basis and could have tested Chelsea’s waters by making an enquiry but the Spanish manager didn’t do it and is now about to miss out on the promising 21-year-old.

Perhaps the perfect conclusion for Newcastle would have been to sign Palmer on a permanent basis after landing Kenedy on a season-long loan from Chelsea.
