According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle United missed out on Brighton winger Solly March in 2011.
The 25-year-old, who was on the books of non-league Lewes at the time, was invited for a trial at Newcastle United in 2011 by then-manager Alan Pardew, but he fell ill on his way to the North East. In the end, a move didn’t materialise and he ended up at Brighton.
Solly March, 25, has been an important player for Brighton in the last few years. He had played a crucial role in Brighton’s promotion to the Premier League in 2017. Since then, the 25-year-old has been a regular fixture for the Seagulls.
Now that March has had a good taste of Premier League football and is a regular starter under Graham Potter at the Amex, should Newcastle reignite their interest in him when the transfer window reopens?
Without a doubt, they must! Newcastle have won just once in the Premier League all season and are currently in the relegation zone. The Magpies were battered 5-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in their last outing, with their performance awful.

While Newcastle’s defence has taken much of the flak for their last few performances, Bruce must prioritise bolstering his attack further in January if he overcomes the torrid time. The Magpies are lacking cutting edge in their attack, with none of Joelinton or Miguel Almiron clicking at the moment.
In Miguel Almiron, Christian Atsu and Allan Saint-Maximin, Newcastle do have pace down the flanks to counter-attack and destroy teams. However, they certainly need some more energy and flair in the final third to start freely. That’s when the signing of Solly March would make sense for Bruce’s side.
March is a natural winger capable of playing of both flanks, with the ability to influence the play in the final third. The 25-year-old is known for his technical quality as well as the ability to distribute possession. He can act as a ball-carrier as well, easing his team’s transition and manufacturing scoring opportunities for his teammates.
The Eastbourne-born star can also protect the ball in tightest of situations and link-up play with others around him. All in all, March would not only add quality to the Newcastle attack but also some much-needed competition in the squad.
Therefore, it could prove to be a shrewd move for Newcastle if they can find a way to bring March to St. James’ Park in January.
