Newcastle signing this 26-year-old MLS star would help Bruce get the best out of Almiron

Why Newcastle United should make a move for Josef Martinez in January

According to a report from AS, Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Atlanta United star, Josef Martinez. The Magpies already signed a former teammate of Josef Martinez’s, Miguel Almiron, and now want to add the Atlanta man to their ranks.

The Venezuelan, 26, joined the MLS club in February 2017 from Italian club Torino and has an incredible goalscoring record at the club. He has scored 32 goals in 36 games across all competitions this season, helping Atlanta to the playoffs where they’ll play the New England Revolution.

Unsurprisingly, the former Torino striker is attracting interest, however, Newcastle aren’t the only club looking at him. Everton are also interested in Josef Martinez, adds the report. That being said, Newcastle must do everything to their powers to beat Everton to the signing of the 26-year-old in January.

Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, with summer signing Joelinton scoring just one goal so far this season. Miguel Almiron is yet to contribute with a goal or assist, while Andy Carroll has played only three times since this campaign returning to the club on a free transfer.

As simple as it gets, Steve Bruce’s side need a prolific goalscorer if they are to avoid relegation from the top-flight. Signing a player like Martinez, who is a proven goalscorer, could be a good move by the Toon Army.

At Atlanta, Martinez and Almiron combined to devastating effect. Doing it in the Premier League is another question but there is no doubting that the duo have the understanding. If Martinez arrives at St. James’ Park, the Newcastle fans could finally be able to see the best of Almiron, who has shown only glimpses of his potential in England.

As far as Martinez’s attributes are concerned, he is a superb goalscorer who comes alive in and around the penalty area and puts away most of his chances. The Venezuelan is incredibly quick and his dribbling skills are a joy to watch.

His ability to take on multiple players as he makes his way towards the goal will be a huge asset for Newcastle if they manage to sign him. The 26-year-old’s right foot is a gem and he has the fantastic ability to score from a long way out.

Martinez would not only solve the Magpies’ goalscoring woes but also help get the best out of Almiron, and having them bustling around Joelinton may just give Bruce’s side much more energy and liveliness in the final third.

Verdict

Newcastle should move for Martinez as they do not have depth in the striker’s department. Working under a demanding manager like Bruce could do a world of good for his development.
