Why Newcastle United Is The Best Destination For Besiktas Superstar Cenk Tosun
Newcastle United have been linked with signing Besiktas forward Cenk Tosun for quite some time. Reports suggest that Besiktas value him at £15m. His exploits in the Champions League have attracted the attention of the Premier League, since even clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have been rumoured to be interested in Tosun.
However, the Magpies are believed to be front-runners as manager Rafa Benitez is understood to be rather impressed by Tosun. Moreover, Newcastle also seems like the best option for Tosun when compared to his other suitors. At Tottenham, the player will have to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, while bottom-placed Crystal Palace can do nothing for his personal growth.
The Turkish international netted twice for Besiktas, as they picked up a highly impressive victory away to French champions AS Monaco. Tosun finished both goals from close range, as Besiktas won 2-1.
The 26-year-old also has netted 4 goals in his eight appearances in the Turkish domestic competition this term. Newcastle scouts have also monitored Tosun, as he scored twice during Turkey’s recent World Cup qualifying clash with Finland.
As things stand, Benitez’s squad could certainly benefit from a more reliable goalscorer like Tosun. The player scored 41 times in the last two seasons for Besiktas and would surely prove to be a better option when compared to the likes of Joselu, Dwight Gayle or Aleksandar Mitrovic.
If Newcastle do land Tosun, however, the fee appears like it could cost them quite some money. With Mike Ashley putting the club up for sale, it remains to be seen how willing the new owners are to splurge on procuring reinforcements in January.
A new forward could do wonders for Newcastle as they embark on their upward journey as far as the league table is concerned. Joselu has proven to be far from the prolific striker the Magpies need to reach the next level, and Tosun’s goal tally at Beskitas suggests he would be a risk worth taking.
Newcastle may not have spent big over the summer but if they are willing to go the extra mile in January, it could make all the difference before the season ends. Tosun’s contract situation also means he could be available for cheap, with just 18 months remaining on his contract by January. Thus, Newcastle could benefit by attempting to sign the goal-scoring hitman in the winter transfer window.
