Newcastle re-signing this experienced French free agent now would help them in the final leg of the season

Newcastle United opinion: Should Newcastle re-sign Yohan Cabaye

After just two losses in their last 6 games, Newcastle have climbed up the table to 13th place, just 3 points off 11th-placed Everton.

But there’s not much breathing space for Rafa Benitez as they could end up in the relegation zone in as little as 2 games with the gap between 14th and 18th place being just 6 points.

The Magpies received a major setback after it was confirmed that young midfielder Sean Longstaff will be out for the rest of the season. The 21-year-old started each of Newcastle’s last 10 games before getting injured and played a huge part in their victories against Manchester City and Burnley.

His absence could prove to be a massive dent in Newcastle’s bid for survival, even with the return of Jonjo Shelvey from injury. However, Rafa Benitez could fill that void by making a smart move for ex-captain and current free agent, Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye made 93 appearances over two and a half years for the club before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in January 2014. He returned to the Premier League 18 months later when he joined Crystal Palace, for whom he played over 100 games. Cabaye left Dubai based side Al Nasr in January, just 6 months after joining them, and is currently unemployed.

Having played over 500 senior games in his career, Cabaye will bring in tons of experience to the Newcastle midfield and his creativity could promote the Magpies to a higher finish than they would currently wish for.

A versatile midfielder, Cabaye is capable of playing anywhere in central midfield and would give Rafa Benitez a variety of options. The Frenchman will add goals to Newcastle and his vision could unleash the likes of Ayoze Perez and January signing Miguel Almiron in front of goal.

The 33-year-old is also a deadly set-piece taker and has the ability to score direct freekicks from improbable angles. His balls into the box are incredibly accurate and he would be an incredible asset for the Magpies given Solomon Rondon’s aerial ability.

Above all, Cabaye will bring leadership to a relatively young and inexperienced side, which could prove to be a boon come the end of the season.

Conclusion

Newcastle United have to fill in the void left by Sean Longstaff and bringing back Yohan Cabaye will be a fantastic move. His creativity and dominance on the ball in the midfield is sure to set up a ton of goals and would potentially guarantee Newcastle United’s safety in the Premier League.
