Why Newcastle must sign this 28-year-old clinical Frenchman to add some edge to their attack

Why Newcastle United must plot a bold move for Valere Germain

After a very positive November, Newcastle United endured a difficult December. The club finished with six points from seven matches, only defeating a struggling Huddersfield Town side along the way.

For all of last season and at the start of this term, the question for Newcastle United was where could they find consistent scoring. Magpies boss Rafael Benitez got his answer in December in the form of Salomon Rondon.

Rondon has virtually carried Newcastle on his shoulders this season, scoring three vital goals in December. In fact, the three December games he scored his goal were the lone goals for Newcastle United as Benitez’s men managed two draws and a win.

It’s clear that Newcastle need to spend in the January transfer window to avoid the drop. The squad lacks the quality to survive in the Premier League and by now, Benitez should be aware of the fact.

The winter transfer market is very difficult to sign players as clubs generally don’t sell players midway through the campaign. Yet, Newcastle must try their best to get in a few players to boost their squad for the vital second half of the campaign.

Rondon has shouldered the burden of scoring goals single-handedly but he needs support up front to continue his rich vein of form. That said, the Tyneside-based club must sign a striker and Benitez should target Marseille forward Valere Germain.

Valere Germain, 28, progressed from the AS Monaco youth system before making his senior team debut back in 2011. After spending six years with Monaco and helping them win the Ligue 1 title in the 2016-17 campaign, he signed for Marseille in the summer of 2017. The 28-year-old managed 18 goals in all competitions in his debut season at Marseille. The forward has three goals to his name so far this campaign.

In Valere Germain, Newcastle would get a striker who is not only adept at holding on to the ball to bring others into play but also has the ability to drift wide and supply his teammates with inch-perfect crosses into the box.

The Frenchman is a clinical finisher in front of the goal and excels with his positional play and anticipation. He isn’t a massive threat in the air but keeps the defenders on their toes with his movement and direct running with the ball.

What makes Germain a really good striker is his work ethic and selfless attitude. He can be the perfect partner for Rondon due to his attributes, giving Newcastle a cutting edge to their attack that has been sorely lacking this term. Newcastle must plot a bold move for Germain this month.
