Nelson Semedo
According to The Mirror, Tottenham are keen on Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo as they are looking for a new full-back this month.
The report also confirms that Kyle Walker-Peters is set to move to Crystal Palace on loan and they are in desperate need to strengthen their squad. Meanwhile, on the other side, Semedo is available as Barcelona are eyeing Real Betis starlet Emerson, who made his Brazil debut back in November.
In that case, Tottenham would definitely be doing a shrewd piece of business if they get their hands on former Benfica star, Nelson Semedo.
Jose Mourinho’s side looked out of competition in the first half of the season but they have managed to return to the top six after putting in the hard work under the new manager.
Despite making it higher up the table, the Lilywhites haven’t been near their best, which was displayed throughout last season. They have failed to emulate the same form on many occasions and the former Chelsea manager must make some changes if they are to bring a change in their fortunes.
One of the chief reasons for their poor form has been the inconsistency of their defence. Club captain Hugo Lloris’ absence has made it worse for them as they look to deal without their first-choice goalkeeper.
The right-back area has been a problem ever since Kieran Trippier left for Atletico Madrid. He had well and truly established himself under Mauricio Pochettino but his departure meant that the North Londoners were going to struggle and the same has happened so far.
Though Serge Aurier is slowly getting used to things, he has sometimes been vulnerable. Whenever he joins the team’s attack, he hasn’t tracked back well to stop opponents from counter-attacking. And moreover, with Walker-Peters set to move away from the club, Mourinho has no other backup option left.
Therefore, this transfer window would be the apt time to bring in a solid full-back and he should make a prompt attempt to lure Nelson Semedo to the Premier League.
The 26-year-old became one of Benfica’s star players with some clinical performances and the Catalan giants brought him to Camp Nou in the summer of 2014. Though he initially struggled there, he went on to make 24 league appearances in his first season in Barcelona.
As days passed by, he slotted in well and filled the void left by Dani Alves. In all, Semedo has made 102 appearances for the Blaugrana and has provided 16 assists.
Predominantly a right-back, Semedo has been a genius while moving forward on the flanks and has made significant contributions to the team’s attack. Not to forget, his defensive sense has been top-notch.
The Portugal international has registered 1.6 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.7 clearances per game in La Liga so far, according to Whoscored. He would be the perfect player whom Jose Mourinho would want by his side and he can help Tottenham for the rest of the season.
At 26, Semedo is a complete player and this would be the right time to take his game to a higher level. The Premier League would exactly help him with that.
Therefore, Tottenham should give him the platform to shine and in turn, he could be their player in the long run. He could work wonders for them along with his compatriot Mourinho.
