Why This 22-year Old Spanish Striker Is A Better Option For Chelsea Than £100m Goal Machine Lukaku

Why Chelsea Must Sign Morata Instead Of Lukaku

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are not too far away from lifting the Premier League title this season and the manager is already planning for life next season. He is looking to improve a few positions in the first team and wants to add quality to his attack this summer. This has seen him get linked with a number of star players recently and two players who are constantly on the radar are Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea’s first team stars Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are linked with an exit but just a season after lifting the trophy, it is hard to see either of them quit the club this summer. So, the Blues will have to buy only one of the two aforementioned names. But who should that be?

Lukaku, with 24 goals and 6 assists in the league, is the top scorer in the Premier League at the moment. He is unsettled at Everton, thanks to a lack of progress and is being chased by Chelsea, a club that rejected him not so long ago.

Morata, on the other hand, has found it hard to cement a place in the first team under Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu, just months after making a move back to Real Madrid from Turin. He has 20 goals and 6 assists in all competitions and has also been in good form.

Both players have their own skill sets and have different approaches to the game. Chelsea will get two completely different athletes, who can be equally influential at the club. While Lukaku can act as a backup for Costa or help Chelsea in a new 3-5-2 system, Morata and his versatility could be a far more potent weapon for the Blues.

Chelsea have the likes of Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro to add to Costa in the attack. Provided all the four players remain at the club, Chelsea need just one addition and Morata looks like a better option.

He can play in the position of all the four players mentioned above, and could actually be an improvement on a couple of them there. He can play in the hole behind Costa with Hazard and Pedro/Willian on either wing when Chelsea go on all-out attack. He can also act as a lone striker in Costa’s absence or cement a place in the side as the first choice player to partner Hazard.

The possibilities are endless, thanks to Morata’s versatility, which is missing with Lukaku. The Belgian is a better target man and his experience in the Premier League will come at a price of £100m. Lukaku is a requirement only if Chelsea lose Costa, while Morata is quite a necessity for the Blues next season irrespective of departures from Stamford Bridge. Surely, at the moment, Morata is who Chelsea need to spend on, more than Lukaku.
