Crystal Palace signing this proven Chelsea hitman would boost their goalscoring prowess

Why Michy Batshuayi would be a smart signing for Crystal Palace

Back in July, Goal (h/t Express) had claimed that Crystal Palace were interested in signing Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi. However, Chelsea slapped a £40m price-tag over the striker’s head and the Eagles refused to meet the valuation.

Michy Batshuayi, 26, has endured a frustrating time at Chelsea since joining from Marseille in 2016. He spent last season on loan with Valencia and Crystal Palace following a spell at Borussia Dortmund in the 2017/18 season.

The Belgian has made just five Premier League appearances so far this season, with manager Frank Lampard preferring Tammy Abraham up front in Chelsea’s attack. However, Batshuayi has four goals in all competitions, most notably scoring the winner against Ajax in the Champions League last week.

Batshuayi may find it hard to force their way into the first-team contention for a while given that Abraham is firing goals left, right and centre. But having turned 26 earlier this month, he needs regular game time in order to fulfil his true potential.

That being said, Crystal Palace must rekindle their interest in Batshuayi and aim to sign him during the January transfer window.

Christian Benteke’s struggles are well documented and show no signs of ending, while Connor Wickham continues to be halted by injuries. Jordan Ayew has surprised many with the way he has led the Palace attack so far this season.

For his work rate, perseverance and ability, he has four goals to his name. However, it seems unlikely that the Ghanaian will maintain that form over the next eight months or so.

Despite a flying start to the season which has seen the Eagles currently occupy sixth place in the table ahead of the likes of Manchester United, Wolves and Tottenham, a new, reliable centre-forward remains an absolute no-brainer. And signing Batshuayi would be sensible.

Batshuayi quickly became a firm favourite at Selhurst Park during his short-term loan spell last season, bagging six goals in 13 appearances for Palace. He formed a lethal partnership with Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend, helping the south Londoners finish 12th in the table.

The Belgian international has shown before that he can score goals. He just needs the game time to do it and Crystal Palace is a place where he could do that. Having played last season at Selhurst Park, it shouldn’t take him much time to gel with Townsend and Zaha.

Verdict

Palace can definitely solve their goalscoring woes with the addition of Batshuayi, who is finding it difficult to break into Lampard’s starting XI.
